Is this '70 worth $2000?

I am looking at this '70 SWB CST and I need some outsider opinions. I am an accomplished mechanic and I can weld (mig) but I have never done sheet metal panel replacements. My big concern with this truck is the drip rail over the windshield. Please take a look and tell me what you think. He is asking $2000 and I have to drive 5 hours each way to get an in-person look at it.

Looks like surface rust to me..can't tell though if it goes all the way through. If its just surface I'd take a wire wheel or sandblast it then re-seam sealer it and you should be good.

Is that the original paint? From the looks of the pics, I would say it is worth 2K.

Original paint? The Maroon over the bondo in the roof, or the GREEN firewall?

Didn't notice the firewall Beer tends to divert my attention The roof could have been "touched up" in the past.
I would need to see it in person to make the call.

Other clues- not a stock color, was a two tone (divider still there for roof color), paint over rust in doors has chipped off in a big piece- paint was not that thick from the factory. Years of looking at them can spot original paint from the freeway off ramp- LOL!

Good info. Still looks like a decent buy for the area. I would be particularly interested in the bed.

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

Liddy71- how can you tell if the door/grill are later models from these pictures?

Tough decision based on the fact that I have to drive 300+ miles to take a look at it. The problem is, there are just not many '70 swb trucks in my area and the ones that are here are out of my price range at the moment.

Decisions...decisions...

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

Gotta be someone closer that can look at it for you. To drive 300 miles to see that truck, doesn't seem worth it to me, from that distance.

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

Personal opinion: That thing is hiding A LOT of rust. When the roof is looking like that, and it's a respray with rust poking through, there has got to be a lot of stuff hiding. Just look at the pool of rust on the kick plate at the bottom of the door in the last picture. That "pool" is coming from somewhere.

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

You'll be fighting rust for ever. The florida climate eats these things. My roof wasn't nearly that bad only a few spots along the drip edge, but it took lots of work to get rid of it (or maybe i just slow it down). I think you'd save a lot of money in the long run to find one with less rust. I'm in Fl. also, if it's close to Stuart let me know, i could look at it for you.

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

def not original paint,

The truck may very well be worth 2k, but it's very hard to judge based on a few pictures on the internet. I know I looked at a ton of em before I bought mine and I looked at one in similar condition,(even with the bed removed).

It was in about the same shape except it had a motor w/ a noise and he was asking $3500 for it, wouldn't bud much.

In my eyes the truck isn't worth 2k, but maybe close.

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

Hard to say, if the box and fenders are as straight as they look then you only would have to work on the cab & some on the doors, not a big deal. It's hard to say how the drop rail will come out without physically seeing it. For a 10 hour drive, its really a preferance at that point. I probably wouldn't because that is a major drive for something that isn't a sure thing. I imagine you can find something closer for similar cash but every region is different. If they are super rare in your area perhaps you must. Well im sure that didn't help.

JMO, but if it were me, I'd put it on your list of possiblities and keep looking, unless he is negotiable on the price - it looks to me like of lot of possible ugly suprises.
