spacing alt bracket? yes/no

I am debating on wht I should do on our 67 C10 SWB with 350 engine. Short story is I have a long water pump on truck came with used motor when I bought and I grabbed p/s brackets/alt brackets from a 72 C10 but my alt is into far now and way close to polished valve covers. So can I space it out or should I get a different alt bracket and change to short water pump? Thanks guys and can post pics if need but will need reinstall bracket. Brandon
