Dirty Dirty Tranny
Well, I'm getting closer to going automatic - just have to do some cleaning and such. I'm pretty sure there's a transmission under there somewhere. The only clean part is the tag!
Can anyone explain the extra steel welded on the flex plate (ring gear or what ever we want to call it today). It sits up pretty high and is actually stamped with a number. Does this mean it was perhaps balanced to the crank shaft and harmonic balancer on the other end? Any and all input is greatly appreciated.... and I'm taking donations of elbow grease!

Re: Dirty Dirty Tranny
Is that not the weight that keeps it in balance? That thing sure is filthy. You will have to be sure and post some "after" pics once you get it all cleaned up.

Re: Dirty Dirty Tranny
Make sure that the flex plate isn't for a 400 small block which I believe used an externally balanced flex plate. I don't think my flex plate had any balance weights on it.

Re: Dirty Dirty Tranny
My bad - it is from a 454 - is there some significance to that?

Re: Dirty Dirty Tranny
the 454 was externally balanced. The flex plate and harmonic balancer were used to get it to run smooth, if you use one of them on a internaly balanced motor it will shake.I bet it would come apart sooner than later aswell.

It's a close call, but mine may have been worse than yours. A little elbow grease and she'll look brand new.

Re: Dirty Dirty Tranny
wow that is filthy, now that is one reason I decided to repaint and clean up everything under my truck to a restored finish. LOL got tired of crawling under it to work and get nothing but dirt and grease in my face. GL Cleaning that thing or finding that leak.

Correct he is. You can knock the weight off if you want to or replace the flex plate and sell that one to a person who needs it. If you have a 383 stroker, 400 or 454 you need the counterweight though. |

Re: Dirty Dirty Tranny
OK - I have the 454, T400, torque converter, flex plate, harmonic balancer and yoke to go from the tranny to the drive shaft. The motor is partly rebuilt (top end not done yet). The balancer rubber looks bad. When I get a new balancer, do I have to put the flex plate on in any special direction/order or rebalance anything? The whole setup is out of a 73 elky SS.

Re: Dirty Dirty Tranny
IIRC there is a locating pin that only allows you to bolt the flex plate up one way.It should go thru a hole located midway or so between bolt holes. It's been a while but that's what I remember.
BTW an hour or so with a scraper,a couple dousings with a good degreaser and I'll bet you find a tranny under there(and I don't mean a man in womens clothing).Take it to the carwash along with some degreaser to do that part.

Re: Dirty Dirty Tranny
I hit it with a scraper this morning, then dragged out all the hoses, set up the pressure washer and started making progress. The washer bogged and I smelled electrical burning... smoked the danged pressure washer.. ugh! Sooooo, I was thinking of hitting it with some easy off... can't find that either... just having one of those days!

Bleche-White is your friend. We use it to clean up stuff all the time. It cuts the dirt and grease pretty quick.
