I had the stock power steering valve and ram replaced with new or rebuilt parts durring my restoration. new pump and new hoses. now it is my understanding that these are undesireable because they constantly leak and are pricey to repair (which is true) so do you think a steering fluid cooler and inline filter would help the longevity of this system or would they plug up and hurt my steering system in the long run?

they were bad designs thats why they went with a more reliable design dont think cooling has anything to do with makin the design function any better

Here is a factory Chevy cooler my dad gave me. I have no idea what year it's for. He had it at the house and said to take it.

well i added the steering fluid cooler anyway. probably pass on the filter. my luck it would plug up and screw up my pump lol. here are the pic's of the cooler on my spare engine and pump. like black and blue said it cant hurt any.

Why do you want to cool the power steering fluid?

I had it laying around the shop and figured every other fluid in a vehicle has a cooler so why not use it on my steering pump. may help extend the life of the pump.

it may also do quite the opposite.

a power steering system is a small hydraulic system and hydraulic fluid (power steering fluid) must reach a certain temperature before it performs effectively ... cooling it can very well lead to EARLY pump failure due to it NOT being at optimal temperature causing the pump extra work in order to circulate it.

For what its worth nearly all newer vehicles for the last 15-20 years have coolers for all the fluids except brake. Engine oil,power steering, transmission,Mercedes have coolers for the hydraulic suspension system it works kinda like a ps system. Fluids have changed consistantly as automotive systems have changed. Engine oil isnt the same as it was 10 years ago. So I think it would be safe to say most others have changed as well and running a cooler is probably benificial in preserving the life of the fluid as well as the components.

Does anyone know what make model year that cooler came off? If I could fine one I would put it on my truck.

Do you really think this could hurt the system? that is not what i want to do here. just thought it might add life to my seals in the system more than anything. I am not sure what this came off. it was on a punp laying loose in my parts shed.

Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
