4.3/700r4

I have a carbed 1985 4.3/4L60 out of an Astro van. It has 35,000 miles on it. I have done GM 350 into Scout II's before. This time I want to do a 4.3 into a Scout 800. I'm thinking about using this engine and deleting the computer. To do it this way I need a new intake manifold, carb and a non-computer dist. What part#'s do I need? Is this a vortec eng? Is the 85 a good version to build? Am I screwing up by deleting the computer? Should I go fuel injection instead? I do have the computer with about 20 miles of wire with it. Your ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. BTW, if there is a better place to post 4.3 questions let me know.

I would ditch the computer and put on an Edelbrock performerwith about a 500cfm carb. I'm not sure if it is a Vortec or exactly how to determine that on the V6.

the 4.3 V6 is a very good engine, with its 4.00" bore and 3.48" stroke, it is essentially a 350 minus 2 cylinders. the engine you have, if it is in fact 4.3, should work just fine without the computer. i'd install an Edelbrock Performer intake, and a 1404 carb if it were mine. the HEI distributor is the same size as a V8 unit, but only has 6 contacts, no you cannot put a V6 cap on a V8 dist. and to answer your question about the ngine being a Vortec or not, no it is not. Vortec 4.3s didnt debut until 92.

Ugghhh, nope. They were first available in 1985. From the Chevrolet Full Size Pickups brochure:

Well, I have the center bolt valve covers so I think it is a vortec. Looks like I'll go with Edelbrock intake and a 500 CFM carb. What about a distributor?

all of the 4.3's were originally called vortecs then it became a 'buzz' word in 92 with the high perf. version of the engine and it cast into the runner on top the engine. the hi-po version is also referred to as the CFI or MPI engine. as opposed to TBI . they only carbed them for 2 years. I made my own NON computer HEI for it and put a NON feedback style QJ . DAVE
