So new Project
1982 Suburban 3/4 4x4
Corp 10 bolt and 14 bolt SF
Was a 6.2 Diesel now has a 350 and 400 trans
Im not sure what T-case it has ???
Looking for some good starters for a street/trail rig more trails

Looks like fun! 4" lift and some 35's and you'll be sittin pretty good for a trail/street rig. Maybe even some 4:11 or 4:56 gears and a heavier front axle..

Hey thanks. Im kinda worried about the front axle. I kinda want a locker for the rear. Idk what gears it has now. Could i fit 36's on a 4" lift.

You may have a locker already. You should look up RPO codes for 82 and check them on your RPO tag in your glovebox. Look for a G80 code. That is the "Axle positraction, limited slip" code.

I have 35 on my 4 inch lift and they will hit if turning and hit a bump/dip

Yeah, 4" with 35's might need some trimming but from one not so perfect truck owner to the other it looks like it wouldn't hurt!

Not a bad start. I would first ask what sort of trails? Mud, rock? Weekend get away that might need 4x4 etc. You could do a 4 inch lift, but why stop there? With htat big long wheel base you could go higher if your not going to do a bunch of side hilling. My rigs alway get a motor and tranny first. Lift second, lockers front and rear third I also tend to regear at the same time. Regearing can come from axle gears or you could regear the transfewr case. You most likely have a 205, but hard to say for sure.

If you go up to 35 tire plan on going to atleast a set of 4.10, the 4.56 would be even better. Then regear the tranny and have agreat low range with out loosing much on the road. Good luck, that burb can become a big trail eating machine with enough time and money.

I like some wooded trails nothing to crazy right now. I do a little muddin. Something with the family. I might do a 6" lift we all know money!!! I would like 4.56's and some nice 35's. I need to look at the T-case and see what it is, is a 205 a good one. A buddy of mine is building a front bumper with a 12,000lbs winch. Its got a built 400 trans and a 383 in the garage.

If you keep the 10 bolt front, the 4:56s will be much nicer to the axleshafts with that 383 and 35's!

The 205 is a great xnsfer case. It is considered to be one of the strongest out there. Like I mentioned you should be able to buy a set of new gears to make its lowest setting even better. Many folks that get into wheeling look at crawl ratios. What you will proably want for your application is a crawl ratio in the neighborhood of 70:1. There are many online calculators you can use. Basically you enter in transfer case, transmission and differential gears and it will calculate a ration. For mudding you really do want a really low ratio. For rackcrawling you will want something closer to 100:1. At any rate good luck with the build I am off to my college class and have to run.
