Re: WTB super nice Black Steering wheel 69-72

I think this is about as nice an original as you will find: NO cracks or stress marks, nice deep grain, no smooth worn spots, no scrapes, even pattern around the rim.................................
$200 + 25 s/h

Re: WTB super nice Black Steering wheel 69-72

Isn't the grain supposed to continue around the rim like this reproduction?

Good eye! Yes, mine has the grain all the way around the top part of the rim.

Re: WTB super nice Black Steering wheel 69-72

This is the BEST original black steering wheel I have ever come across...just like Frank's. It is not for sale, but just as a reference. You will need a true, in-the-box NOS wheel IMO, to get one with the grain unworn all the way around the top part of the rim. That would be an awesome find Good luck in the hunt, and ttt!

Re: WTB super nice Black Steering wheel 69-72

Thanks, I might just buy a repop then....the blue one I have looks really nice. Unless I find an NOS one for a reasonable price...

Before I pull the trigger for a repop...I have time before I need it so I'll keep this bumped up to see if I find an elusive original with grain still on it.

Re: WTB super nice Black Steering wheel 69-72

Hi Jonathan, is there more than one company producing the repops? The one I had didn't seem quite right, seem to flex too much and cracked badly and quickly at the hub. Let me know if there is another brand I should be looking at. I bought mine from a board member. Not sure, but I'm guessing it was LMC. Sharpie

I am not sure. Got this one through Mike's bump and grind last year. It seems very solid, I've had it for a year and it was in my garage (hot and cold)and no cracks (although I never put it on) and looks correct other than the stampings noted on the inside of the wheel at the finger grips...

I actually called Gary (cheyenne super man) and he said there was a big problem with the repops 6-7 years ago but he's had a lot of success with the recent revisions if that helps you any.

You are correct. The repops are more flexable. You can bend the rim back and let go and they snap back. The OEMs don't bend.
The repops seem to have a much deeper exagerated grain.
I think there is one company "making" the repops.

Your wheel looks fairly worn from spoke to spoke across the inner upper rim...

If you keep your eye out for the low mile original trucks, that is were you will fine the nice one's. Here is an original black wheel from a 55K original mile cheyenne 30 open road r/v. Mel

I found a "NOS" steering wheel cap for sale but it has a yellow bowtie....the shape looks correct...what would that be for?

The yellow-bowtied-cap is the same cap used in all of the 69-72 caps. But the 69-72 caps had a blue painted bowtie. The yellow is for 1973 up to the late 70s...not sure of the exact year they stopped using that type of cap. And, the yellow cap that is shaped like the 69-72 caps, may have only been used in some models (i.e. vans, blazers, burbs...).

I'd buy it if I were you if it's reasonably priced. You can always paint the bowtie blue. Or, wait, I've seen some pretty blue bowtie nice caps offered at times on here or eBay.

the yellow caps were on the later vans that used the 69-72 style wheel.
