Seat swap question?

Not sure if this has been asked before or not so if so sorry guys. I have an '87 Chevy and wanna put the seat in my '63 Chevy but from the looks of it it won't bolt right up. Anybody know what I gotta do to bolt it in to my '63?

Thanks

Re: Seat swap question?

Chances are you are going to have to fab a bracket to adapt the later model seat to your 63. I dont know what my seat is from, but its welded to a 4" piece of channel and that is bolted to the floor in new holes.

Re: Seat swap question?

That don't sound like too much trouble, maybe I can build a bracket or something in Ag. at school.

Re: Seat swap question?

Just put the seat in the truck and shim it up till it fits you good and see what it will take to make a bracket from there. The seats usually have their own framework and only need to be mounted on both sides. That's where the channel or other steel can make a nice bracket.

I can take pics of mine tomorrow and show you what I have if thats helpful for you.

Re: Seat swap question?

If you don't wanna go through all the trouble or work of fabbing brackets you can go to the junkyard and find a decent bench out of an early 90's silverado and put that in. Front holes match up, just need to drill two holes for the rears and your done. Picked up my seat for around 40 bucks.

Re: Seat swap question?

Hey Nachodog, any pics of that seat in your truck? I'm about to get my OE bench seat reupholstered but might go for a newer seat for more comfort.

Re: Seat swap question?

Hey dracko, I'll get pics of it tonight. Alot of the seats are the 40/60 split type but i got mine out of a 93 silverado work truck that had a full bench so it looks almost stock minus the 40/60 style upholstery which will be remedied when i do some tuck and roll on it.

Re: Seat swap question?

Reading this thread makes me feel like a hack But then again my truck had over 25 holes in the floor when I got it from all the previous owners seat swaps and looney stuff Hell the shifter hole in the floor was big enough to stick your head through

Since my truck will never be a restored original here's how I did mine:
  • with the seat bracket fastened to the seat(s) set the seat(s) in place, get them centered and positioned for adjustment by putting the seat as far back as it will go in the cab but with the seat adjustment in the back position,
  • put some masking tape on the floor where the brackets are,
  • mark the location of the seat bracket holes on the masking tape,
  • remove the seat,
  • drill holes in the floor,
  • debur the holes,
  • paint areas adjacent to the new holes,
  • put the seat back in and bolt it down. Be sure to use large flat washers under the cab.
You can use some bolts with sealing washers (washers with rubber gaskets vulcanized to them, get'em at Home Depot) to plug up the old holes. I apply a liberal amount of never seize to keep bolts and washers from rusting up in case you need to remove the seats later.

And yes, making brackets to attach to the factory mounting holes is a good idea. In my case it just wasn't justified... ain't much "factory stock" left in my old beast.

Hope this helps.

Okay thanks. It sounds like a good option since i'll be getting it recovered anyways.

Re: Seat swap question?

Miller92: Here are the pics of my seat brackets. Hope it helps you.

Lakeroadster: I hear ya about the holes. I spent a lot of time welding all mine up in the floor. I should be done with the inside of my cab this weekend and can show off a little.

Might have to turn your head for this one. Sorry.

here are some pics of my seat out of a 93 silverado, only the two rear mounts needed some holes drilled. the fronts match up pretty good.

Thanks for the pics Nacho. That seat looks like a real good fit in there, color even fits the bill! Gonna see if I can't find one around here for cheap.
