My Impulsive 69' Belair

Yesterday I came across a 69' Belair with a 327, 3 on the tree, and factory air and and I just couldnt say no... Of course at a price of
$340 who COULD say no! Theres no dents to speak of almost zero rust and all of the chrome seems perfect! Ill be trailering it home in a couple days. I have no idea what I plan to do with it. I may flip it so I have more cash to put into my shortbox but for the price I couldnt let it get crushed. Thats what he was going to do with the car if he didnt sell it by today. The guy I bought it from got it from an older guy 10 years ago who used it just to run into town and as a grocery getter. I dont think anything has been messed with or modified at all. He took it home and parked it in his paved driveway and let it sit ever since. He said its been 10 years but the last tags on the car were from 1996. Theres almost no rust to speak of outside of one fender and hes even got all four original hub caps! I cant wait to get it all cleaned up.

Let me know what you think or what you know about this car. All i know is they only made this car with a factory 327 1 year.

Stupid question though. Ive never driven a 3 on the tree. What is the shift pattern?!?

Cool! Brings back memories our family car was a 69 Impala. The car I took my drivers test in.
A couple years later I had a 69 Caprice. both were big blocks.
Drive it you'll like it.
Cadillac smooth...............

H pattern only on the tree. IIRC up is R, down is 1st. You'll figure it out.

Sweet thanks man. Next weekend Ill be swapping the 327 for my tired but running 307 just to get it driving under its own power for now. Then Ill rebuild the 327 and see what we can do from there. Im excited for the manual on the column. Thats something ive never had before.

Awsome score... And you certainly can't beat that price!

Have you tried to fire up the 327 at all?

Re: My Impulsive 69' Belair

I think im going to rebuild the 327 and throw it back in. Then it will be all numbers matching and I think the 327 kinda adds to the cool factor.

Re: My Impulsive 69' Belair

i think the best looking impalas were 65-90. Everybody goes ape over the 61-64 and i don't understand why.

i think what would look good would be an all black 69 impala coupe with green stripes/trim. Not nessesarily flames.

1969 was the last year for the 327 in those b-bodies, not the only year they came with them.

I didn't even know they HAD Belairs in 69! I thought they dropped that name long before that in favor of Caprice and Impala...

In 69 they had a Caprice, Impala, Bel Air and Biscayne and they had that up until 73 for sure, I think they dropped the Biscayne in 74

Cool car....Im surprised it came with a 3on the tree.... usually the 327s had a glide

Is this car lowered? I like tho look but Im Completely drawing a blank on what to do for ride height and wheels/tires! My wife has taken a very strong liking to the car and she says she wants to do all black with pink flames of some sort. Not so sure about that but well see when she gets it drawn up.

I just got the car home and as it turns out the guy had no idea what he was talking about. It is a 327 but according to the column it shows a 2 speed glide. I havent been under the car yet to confirm. Im not real worried about it tho. That will be changed later to accommodate better mileage. Im the third owner but the second owner only drove it once. On the way home the day he got it. Its been sitting since 99'.

Should I try throwing the water pump back on and firing it or would I risk damaging something after such a long sit?

Re: My Impulsive 69' Belair

Finally heres a pic without all the snow. I couldnt line up a trailer that it would fit on so I had to tow it about 60 miles. After closer inspection it looks like I will need water pump gasket, a hood hinge, and some fresh gas. Otherwise its complete and solid. Brakes are good, windows all roll up, all locks work, doors latch, seat belts click, even the tires are in decent drive-able shape with the original hup caps! The "project" part of this car is going to be paint and interior really. I almost dont know what to do with so little to fix on a 42 year old car.

From here that paint justs looks unkept, a buff/wax would probably do wonders for it.

True, but a closer look would show light rust showing through on the roof and rear deck. Until im ready to start on paint stuffs I think im going to buff up whats there and see what I can make of it with as little as possible.

Re: My Impulsive 69' Belair

It has the turbo-350 trans.
And the hood hinge from any 65/70 fullsize Chevy will fit.
I don't see factory air-maybe aftermarket air?
69-first year for 350 trans,long waterpump(on the right side).
The shift pattern is an "H".Same as 3-speed floor shift except on the column.
It's a very nice, clean looking car and a great deal for the price!
I have a 65 Caprice,a 65 Impala,2 67 Impala's.
I think they are some of the best GM has ever produced.
Also,68/69 327's were the large journal cranks.Your's should have disc brakes and probably the 10 bolt rear(if you're lucky,it has the 12 bolt rear!).
And I think the BelAirs went as far as 1976!
Mike.

Wow thanks for the info! Heres a pic of the Dash. The PO said the car was never modified or molested so i have no reason to assume otherwise. The ac compressor is sitting in the passanger seat and theres lines running into the firewall. Ill look more on monday when im off and have more time to get back to the car. It even says air on the climate controls. I dont know much about these old boats though.

If you have disc and your rotors are wore out they cost 150 a piece.Impalas.net has a topic that shows how to use a 69-80 somthing corvette rotors. The vette rotors only cost 50 at the local auto zone.
