I made the deal today and purchased the 1966 Suburban Custom today. Here are a few pics. I'll post more soon. It is pretty much all original with a 283 and runs great. We should have it on the road in no time.

Does anyone know what the story is with the hood emblem?

These are on both doors. What are they?

This thing had a lot of options, including factory cigarette lighter and matching locks on all three doors. All of the factory custom trim is there, and it has two of the four door window latches. I'm really surprised that it didn't come from the factory with gauges. That's an easy fix though. There is quite a bit of rust, but it's all expected and fixable.

Does anyone know what the switch on the bottom right of the steering column is for?

Thanks! I think you're right about the brake controller. It has a hitch mounted under the factory bumper. I'm not sure about the little brackets. They swivel up and down, so I don't know if they would work for mirrors.

Thanks guys! This one, like my truck will truly be a family project. It's going over to Missoula to live with my dad though. My brother, mom, and I bought it as a birthday present for him. He and I have worked together on my truck since the beginning, and we hope to do the same with the burb.

I was shocked when I heard it run. It purrs like a kitten! We just have to find out why the brakes aren't working, and we'll be able to cruise! I've missed driving my truck around since I started the frame-off, so I'll be able to get my fill.

Nice find, especially being a 'Custom' It looks to be relatively straight, just has the typical rust issues.

awesome buy that being a custom with the custom trim and custom trim around the windsheild i noticed it looks like there are aluminium trim around the headlights so the grill may be aluminium with paint over it nice score!!!!!

Thanks Captain. We're going to be in the market for one of your brake booster brackets soon. We have an '89 GMC that might end up as the engine donor, plus I think it has the right booster assembly.

I just found out today that the previous owner had the original aluminum grille. He had it loaded up in the sub when I picked it up. It has a big dent in it from hitting a pheasant, but I'd guess it's fixable. So, we got the aluminum one, and the perfect painted one that's on it now.

I swapped in the single pot MC from my truck, and the brakes worked perfectly. They definitely need new fluid, but it was easy.

No problem. I think it is worth a lot more even up here, but we got it for $800.

This thing was a great deal. We threw on a new master cylinder, hopped in and drove it 50 miles home with no problems.

Dug into it today and changed the oil, air filter, fuel filter, and the gear oil in the transmission and rear end. It doesn't have a posi (go figure), but it does have 3.73's that are in good shape. We also emptied the whole thing out to see if there was anything else we were missing, but there were no surprises (good or bad). The fuel tank needs replaced. It has several dents and a fairly large JB weld patch job. We'll have to figure out what tank to put in. The build sheets are gone, which is too bad.

Overall, I couldn't be more pleased with how this thing is turning out.

Here are a couple pics of the engine bay. The whole engine is painted orange, and doesn't appear to have the stock valve covers. It makes me wonder if the engine has been overhauled at some point.

Does anyone have recommendations for repairing the rust along the bottom of the rear quarter panels? Do parts from SWB pickup beds fit, or are we left to search the junkyard?

The SWB bedside patch panels are what I'll be using. I haven't used them yet, but as far as I can tell those will work for the most of the Burb lower quarters. You may have to do a little forming or fabbing small pieces depending on the extent of your needed patch size.

I spent a bunch of time removing a rusted-on wheel and brake drum. I managed to knock a couple of wheel studs into the brake drum while trying to bust the wheel loose. Once I got the wheel off, I had to fight the drum for several hours with doses of PB blaster and BFH. When you have a battle like that, victory is sweet though. She's back on the road now with a set of "new" tires and a new rear window. Next step is to find a new fuel tank. This one's a mess.
