Holes in roof for teardrop marker lights

I'm sanding my truck (72 Cheyenne Super BB) down to bare metal to prep for body work and paint. In the process of sanding the roof down I found a hole...then another....and then a pattern emerged. 5 sets of 3 holes. One further back, one larger and then a smaller one a little forward of that. The roof is flat and nowhere on the spid does it show clearance/marker lights for the roof. So it's not that (plus they wouldn't have had three holes)

Any clue?

It was under what I assume was the factory primer but was filled in with filler....didn't think they used filler then....

Any info would be appreciated.

Re: need help identifying these holes in my roof

It looks like it had the teardrop cab lights on it at one time. The two small holes were screws and the bigger was for the wire. It looks like it was primed and painted over the original paint.

Re: need help identifying these holes in my roof

Thanks for the fast response.

Those were some big teardrop lights then judging by how far they are spaced apart.... Guess the original owner liked them. Oh well. Just 15 more holes to weld up and grind (carefully due to heat on the roof skin)

Re: need help identifying these holes in my roof

I had a 70 with those teardrop shaped lights on it and it looked VERY similar to that pattern. I wonder if the Super had cab lights on it? It was an option on the 1/2 ton, wonder if it is the original cab if it is not on the spid? Maybe owner installed later?

If it had factory lights they would have had a raised puck portion on the roof skin from the factory.

This is definitely the original cab. Vin matches spid sheet, has the bucket seat supports, the hole in the firewall for tach, etc etc...
can tell vin tag hasn't been messed with. And the driver's door matches the vin also.

Just must have been someone that wanted the lights and added them.

Not necessarily true. Not all factory lights were the hocky puck style lights. If my memory serves me right, they did not use those untill 69 or 70. I had a 50th anneversery truck with factory tear drop clearance lights. I still have the lights and harness. They were listed on the build sheet and glove box option sheet for that truck. WES

Cool, thanks for the info! I always learn something at least once a week on here and many times daily

So now I'm thinking most likely the original owner added them at some point because he liked them and at some point they were removed....

....I'm assuming (bad to do) that if it were a factory assembly line mistake it would have been filled with metal or brass and not filler? And as mentioned it looks like the roof was repainted. I was sanding the firewall and inside of the driver's door after the roof and it was amazing how fast the paint came right off compared to the layers of paint on the roof....

....at least it never rusted up there.....

Re: need help identifying these holes in my roof

Does anyone have a factory teardrop marker light they can measure where the mounting holes and the wire hole would be? Just trying to confirm that's it.

Here are the measurements from my roof...

Can't help on the roof holes but was hoping you would tell me where the hole for the tach goes. I'm wondering if one of my rigs had one.

b eing that your truck was a 72, it would have the raised mounting pads. Those holes were added by a person after the truck came off the assembly line.

Re: need help identifying these holes in my roof

um i could be wrong but i think the "puck" that every one is refering to is actualy a rubber gasket that sets on top of the cab and under the light assembly. the factory lights look to me to be the same from i dont know when untill they changed the body style in 89 for 1/2 and 3/4 and 91 for the crew cabs. also were used on the c/50,60 ect. but i could be wrong.

Cab marker lights at one time were the shape of a hockey puck

It's the hole in my firewall picture between the fuse block and e-brake. It will be a round hole if you had it from the factory. If not (as seen in the labeled picture) it will just be a dimple

Here's mine...the round hole between the large square and rectangle on the driver's (right) side

Re: need help identifying these holes in my roof

69 to 87 (or 91 for 3500) had a raised pad stamped in the steel in which the rubber base mounted on.

Thank you. Mystery solved I assumed it was some kind of lights but you know what kind of trouble you can get into when assuming things

I had the same problem- sanding my roof down and started finding the holes- I was like crap! - you never know what's hiding under the paint...
