72 Travel Tank (Aux) Sending unit

Does anyone know where I can get a sending unit that might fit the Original
16 gal aux tank?

Any help is appreciated.

Liv,

Thanks for the help. Have't got too far with the number. I'd be ok with a universal or what you found aftermarket. Do you have a make and model?
Never thought the aux tank was this tricky. Thanks Again

Your truck looks sweet. I want to be driving in a couple months...

I would be interested in this as well, my right hand tank won't indicate anymore.

Here is a picture
6428850 works better. There is one on ebay rt now going for $199 ouch.

Thanks for the help Liv.

I am going to look at a Blazer/ Burb sender and see if I can make it work.
It is the closest looking to the sender I need. Would need to drill the 5 holes
onto the flange.

I will post any final results and pics of my aux 16 gal if and when I can complete witha sending unit.

Hopefully it will work for you, I just noticed you mentioned it was your right hand tank that did not register, if you have a passenger side tank it is aftermarket and not from the factory. all of the aftermarket tanks I have seen use a "universal sender"
I am pretty sure all of the mounting screw holes will be the same..(although they are staggered and will only go in one way)
The depth of the tank would be the issue.. if its the same depth it should work. but if your tank is more shallow then it will be a problem, be sure to measure the length of your old sender with the new one..

Re: 72 Travel Tank (Aux) Sending unit

Are you sure that it was aftermarket? Camper Specials had the option of 2 extra tanks or 2 tool boxes. He advertised that it was for the aux tanks. But anyways if it works I'm excited to be able to use both tanks.

Not sure about the factory option for the rt side. Need a Gas Guru to chime in. Maybe LHorn Knows.

Todd, That sender is roughly shy of 10"high or deep. Do you have a pic of the rt side tank?

Good score by the way. I'm having my travel tank boiled and sealed for 135
Then I still need to hunt down the s unit. See if the seller has another?

I am also either replacing my cab tank or boiling and sealing again. 2 senders.

No fishing or snowboarding for a while

HAs anyone else boiled and sealed the stock cab tank vs. buying a made in u know?

I had one of these aftermarket travel tanks boiled and sealed. The shop that did it said most stock fuel tanks that old don't boil and seal - they are too thin but that travel tank is made out of plate so it will work just fine.

Based on that I'm thinking you won't be able to fix your stock cab tank.

In that situation you might want to consider a Blazer tank and just get rid of the seat tank.

Re: 72 Travel Tank (Aux) Sending unit

Oh and I should add I didn't know you could get a sender with a float on it when I repaired my saddle tank about 10 years ago. I used the sender that was in there and added a universal float/gauge from JC Whitney to let me know how much fuel is in there.

I just drilled another hole in the top of the tank per the spec in the universal instructions after making sure the spot I picked wouldn't interfere with the fuel pick-up tube in there.

I don't have a picture, but the right side tank is mirror image of the left.

There were only left side auxiliary tanks offered by the factory and the tool & stowage compartment was only offered for the right side. These were available on any 8' Fleetside. Custom Camper (not Camper Special) has nothing to do with it. You can buy aftermarket sending units for far less than $100. It's a shame to see this factory original part not go with a factory tank and see a factory tank modified to accept an aftermarket unit.

mrein,
thanks for the heads up on the tanks. It only takes a fellow member that been there before. This forsight and knowledge is very helpful and helps people get it done quicker and some peace of mind.

I like the idea of leaving the cab empty and going with the blazer tank.
Are you talking like the brothers conversion repop for $199? any recommendations? If I decide to run the 2 tanks, my latest challenge is replacing the tired and rough brass fuel tank selectorwhich I have found for about $110 but most people want about $150-180.
Not original but iswould work. The hard part is its a 6 port brass valve cuz of
return lines. Anyone down this road yet?

Last econo resort boil out the saddle and run with one.????

Special K, Your the guru we were waiting on. Thanks

My sentiments exactly. I find it odd that none of the vendors want to touch
the auxilary tank dept.

Brothers and LMC catalog clearly states:

"Gas Tank sending unit not available for aux tanks". Nor a replacement aux when a million other items are available?? for these trucks?

Kind of a mystery. My guess is in restoring them we are not traveling that far to need an aux tank, or using a trailer, or lightening the load.

For those guys who might still use it like a truck...

All we need is someone to atleast make that ONE sending unit.

I have no experience with the repop tanks but lots of folks on here use them. From what I've read here you want a metal one and not one of the plastic ones that are available.

I have an original tank out of a 1972 Blazer that I purchased from the same truck that donated its TH350 and NP205 to my cause. I am just going to rinse it out and run it if it doesn't leak. If it leaks I'll be looking at a re-pop myself.

Regarding the selector valve, by coincidence there is a recent thread where somebody found an on-line source for a new selector. Click your way over to
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=453477. It looks like you're only talking $30 for a new one that supports two tanks. If you need return lines I'm sure there is a selector switch out there, possibly from the Anderson Brass Company link at the bottom of the hyperlink I posted here. I still have a stock fuel pump and carb so I just need a to the engine and not a from. When I had to replace my selector for stupidly dropping a wrench on the handle and snapping it off I found an identical selector to what I broke at a hardware store that is connected to a marina. The marina side is the largest Ranger dealer in the country but the hardware side is still old school. The selector didn't have a price on it. I had one of those conversations that are getting more rare.
"How about $30?"
"I got $25 cash on me."
"OK. $25."
"That thing is probably $60 next door."
Maybe in this economy Frankie's isn't the largest Ranger dealer any more but you should see the number of glitter rockets that show up on the back of a semi there.

Show me a sending unit that will exactly fit my truck and will properly indicate fuel level that costs less than $100.
