Running out to get a new shop fridge this morning
Regrettably my old Hotpoint died. It spewed oil inside which I assume is the end of it. I've had this thing since '94 and had always wanted to fix it up. I suppose that I'll hang onto it until I figure out whether or not I can fix it.
I told my wife that I found a new one.. W) Is it new? m) Newer, 1950's. W) What's it look like? m) Pink with a teal interior. W) What does it really look like? m) Pink with a teal interior. W) No comment but eyes rolling... To be continued.

with oil inside the box that means your cooling coil sprung a leak// scrapping instruments aiding in quick defrosting or deicing?
the newer the refrig the cheaper to run in all reality a higher priced 2-3year old box pays itself off in a really short time

Re: Running out to get a new shop fridge this morning
My pure guess is that one of the lines failed after 70 +/- years. I can't be sure until I can find a service manual for the thing and tear it down. Just watch i'll trip over it for another decade and not try to fix it!
The new one is home. Its a General Motors Frigidaire. It was made in 1958 so It should do for many more years. Although I'm not crazy about the color it does have a coolness about it. Maybe I'll paint a Rat Fink on the door? we'll see.

Just paint Ratty on it and pinstripe it in brown.Nobody will even notice the thing till they want a cold one.

Re: Running out to get a new shop fridge this morning
SOM, that Hotpoint looks a lot like the one I am getting from my in-laws house as we get it ready for sale. They are both gone now and the kids (my wife and her siblings) are dealing with the house and contents to ready the house for the market. The fridge sets on the back porch and was used to sell eggs, whole milk and cream on the honor system years ago. If no one was home, get what you need from the fridge and leave your money in the mason jar on top of the fridge. I defrosted the lunch bucket sized freezer just the other day. Plan on using it for a beer fridge in the shop. I know it is not the most energy effective fridge but just keeps my in-laws to mind. I miss them both, they were good hard working people from the old school when times were much differant. Do you know what year your Hotpoint was mfg'rd? I need to replace the old power cord on the one I am getting before using it.

Re: Running out to get a new shop fridge this morning
My father in law has a dead one similar to your dead one. He used to use it for keeping his welding rods dry. Its just sitting out there in his shop. I was going to ask him if he wants to get rid of it.
I was thinking about totally gutting the insides and just using it for a cabinet. Maybe put one of those mini bar size fridges inside of it?

Re: Running out to get a new shop fridge this morning
Darn it my pink one died. So after some searching I found a Kelvinator. It came to me in parts, covered with wood grain vinyl and a claim that it works. I snagged it for fifty bucks. It runs quiet and cold. I'm hanging on to the pink one in hopes to repair it someday.

Re: Running out to get a new shop fridge this morning
It's missing a piece of trim on the door. I'm assuming it was a simple chrome strip. It should be fairly easy to find something at the wrecking yard that will work.

DUDE!!! Great job on the paint work! I was just today thinking about some kind of pin up girl something in the garage... you've given me an awesome idea!
...and my grandparents had the exact fridge that pooped the bed (pink with teal interior).

Re: Running out to get a new shop fridge this morning
That "new" one is very similar to the one I had in the garage at the house where I lived with the ex, before divorce.
She painted it in a black and white blotchy pattern, to look like the cow it was. Not the most efficient thing, but it was older than either of us and still working. This just serves to remind me that I need to replace the one in my kitchen. It's a side by side that I have hated for years.
