Re: rear view mirror fell off!

You buy new sticky. You can get it at any parts store or Wal-Mart.

Re: rear view mirror fell off!

The sticky (glue) is pretty cheap. Just scrape it all off with a razor blade, clean with the provided swab, apply glue to metal piece and tape it to the windshield for a bit without the mirror on it.

Re: rear view mirror fell off!

We do a lot of those here in the summer months, I keep a few of the glue kits just laying around actually. Just did it on my 87 last week when the new windshield was put in. Sorta chapped me the new glass did not come with a mounting tab already on it.

Put some tape on the outside of the windshield to mark where your old tab was glued (real easy if your old residue is still there). Clean the inside really good and use a razor to remove all the old glue residue. The glue kit comes with glue and activator, the activator is usually in a cardboard tube and a soft tip (like a marker). Rub the activator on the glass, wait a few moments and put the glue on the mounting tab (be sure you know which way the tab goes, installed backwards or upside down and you'll be sorta pissed). Put the tab on and put a piece of tape on it to hold it in place. Let it dry several hours or over night, slide the mirror on and tighten up the set screw and you're done!

The kits cost like $2 or something at NAPA, O'Reillys, Advanced or WalMart.

Re: rear view mirror fell off!

I did it twice on my 83. The second time the mirror fell off it took the bracket and and big chunk of the windshield glass with it. I now have my rear view mirror mounted to the trim piece on the headliner with a big sheet metal screw - crude but effective.

Re: rear view mirror fell off!

I went through that last summer. I battled with the cheap sticky back tab that they sell at Walmart...didn't last, bought some cheap glue for mirrors, didn't work. My co-worker does window tinting so he has to deal with the tabs now and then. He lent me some glue that he bought from a dealership. I believe the can just had a part number on it and a label - "Rearview Mirror Adhesive". A good cleaning, a 'primer' and two drops... problem solved.

It's sold at dealerships only, it's not too cheap, but it does the job. Luckily for me, he already had the can and had no problems with giving me a couple drops...

Re: rear view mirror fell off!

Over the years, mine has fallen off several times. It seems that auto parts store glue isn't good enough for my mirror. I might look into the dealer route, cause mine is laying on the seat again.........................

Re: rear view mirror fell off!

I must have tried 3 or 4 different glues for reattaching rear view mirrors and mine wouldnt stay for more than a few days at best. Ended up using some two ton epoxy and its now been holding for several months. Might be an idea?

Re: rear view mirror fell off!

I can't tell you how many times my mirror has come un-glued. I finally bought a 71 Chevy P/U mirror that affixes with screws to the inside cab. Problem solved!

Re: rear view mirror fell off!

well it seems that the residue that was left is a little harder to get off then just sticky remnants. a blade did absolutely nothing to it. even sprayed some goo gone to no avail. anyone think i'll have a problem using just super glue with it sticking to whats left on the windshield?

Re: rear view mirror fell off!

The one time I had the residue not come off, I had to glue the tab on in a different location. You can put it a little to the left, right, up or down and it still function.
What happened in my case was, someone had glued the tab on to the glass with something stupid and it ate in to the glass but would not totally adhere to the metal tab.
