truck wont start help
at the sellers house it started up fine, with the help of a jump. as soon as i got it home to start it up, it wouldnt. So then i put my jumper cables on it and then the wires started to smoke and bubble up( the ones on the battery). now nothing happens when i turn the key.any ideas what i can check or look for??
also i thought black was negitive???   also heres the one of the wires that bubbled. i replaced one that was terrible but it didnt do anytihng  anybody have any idea?? i dont know where to start

positive goes to starter
negative goes to ground not sure what the small red wire is for (resistor ?) looks like you got jumper cables backwards to me... check all fuses... |

Since it did run, air and gas should not be an issue. Get a good/better battery, clean up the connections and follow the spark or more like where there is no spark. Look for more "bubbled" wires, tape as you go for now. HTH..good luck...don t. .... |

You can't go by wire color on used trucks this old. Lots of "creative" wiring is usually from PO's. Always see where the pos and neg is on the battery.

you will most likely need a new alternator and if it has an HEI the module will probably need replacement also. neither of these components will generally survive reverse polarity application. and any wiring that shows bubbles in the insulation needs to be replaced.

Also check your voltage regulator.

I did get it figured out! finally it starts up, just replaced the bubbled wires and hooked it up to a battery charger. now all it needs are some brakes. then i can somewhat drive it/move it around.
heres a video of it running and how bad of shape its in, hopefully by the end of summer it will be somewhat decent.

I was thinking - that's not so bad - but, the bed IS bad - but it did remind me of how much I miss the sound of my old truck (20 years ago).... been running around with a 6 for a few years now...sigh... A little soap, a little sandpaper and touch up, toss a blanket over the seat, some plywood in the bed (minus the extra steel), get it road safe and drive the bejeepers out of it.

the battery cables I'm not one for those cable attacher's I like the Lead one that are all one battery cables.There better ground You might want to go down and buy some sea foam its will help you engine and your oil and make it idle better And if you have miles on that engine Best off to Use a Can of ( Restore ) it comes in a chrome can here is a picture
