Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
You need to get a copy and read "TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY" by John Steinbeck, It about his travels with a 1960 GMC camper with his dog. A really great book, a great snap shot of America in 1960.

We plan on starting out taking short trip right up by our house to lake Berryessa to do a little bbq and playin on the water! Should be fun. This thing is in awsome shape! Great pix for a starter!
I'll say it again, that's a beautiful find! You should make some commercial type pix while you're camping too. That would be awesome! Kinda like this: |

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
Great truck, and what a cool project, the best of both worlds for me. The truck part and the camper part. Pull the windows especally the front cabover, and reseal them. These older motor home rotted out from the inside well before the chassis was worn. You shouldn't have any trouble runing around just not as fast as you would like. Having the wife helping wil make it a lot of fun. I had a 73 HArvest that my wife hepled me with. I had to rebuild the whole thing from the insde out. It was a fun project.

What is that device on top of the steering colunm? Looks sort of like an old Radio Shack intercom system.

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
Went up to Redding yesterday and had the truck towed from the guys property I bought the truck from. It was parked for the past three years because the water pump was needing replaced. So when I got to the guys house they were moving stuff from around the GMC to clear a path to get it out. I asked if the tow truck would be able to get back there to get it? The guy said no we'll drive it out! I was stunned it fired right up, old gas in the tanks didn't seem to matter. It's a dually and the drivers side inner tire was low on air and from trying to get the truck out of the holes it had sunk down into for the three years of sitting it spun the tube into the tire. The po hadn't registered it since 2009 so he said after they took $88.00 from his taxes there is $240.00 left in back registration. I had the truck towed to a buddies house that cost me $202.00 for a 15 mile tow! Ouch! I called around and Napa auto parts is the only place around that can get the water pump. $78.99 so when me and my wife go back up to Redding for kool april nights on the 15th I'll install the water pump and fix the leaking fuel line from the pump and drive it very slowly home! I didn't think to make a video of it trying to get out of the hole. But I took a couple pics of under the hood.

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
Some pics of the motor. Powersteering and powerbrakes! The A/C need to be charge but the knee nocker turned on and blew. The thing on the steering coulmn is a old radioshck intercom that didnt work. The factory am radio worked. And there is some sort of fuel milage guage that tells you when your getting the best fuel milage! That worked also. I drove up to Redding at 12:30and made it there by almost 3. Got the truck towed and left Redding by 6 and was home by 8:30 so I didnt get to play with everything on the truck. I wont get to see it again tell the 15th. Anyway here are the motor pics.

Are there many of these campers still around? I would love to see more, and what you have done to fix them up for camping!

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
These are sweet rigs! I have a 65 Chev C-30 self contained Caveman brand rig built in Grants Pass, Oregon in '66.
We have been using it for quite a few years now - it came out of a barn near Portland, Oregon. I have upgraded to disk brakes in front, '02 Tahoe seats for the built-in shoulder belts (bonus 6 way power!). Right now in the process of finding out that I bought the WRONG motor mount perches to put the 76 350/350 that's hanging on a chain out there in it! When I finish getting the 350/350 in (replaces a fine old 292 I-6), then I will pull it out of the garage and shove it in back end first to put the rear end from the 76 donor truck under it. I am new here, my bud WOOGEROO turned me on to your new truck from over at Chevytalk 60-66 Chevy trucks (gmc welcome too). I just joined and think it looks like a great outfit! best of luck with your new JIMMY! Joe |

You and your family are going to totally LOVE the new rig. I highly suggest upgrading those old brakes though...along with EVERYTHING made of rubber that seems important.

That thing is awesome. If anybody knows where I can find that original seat fabric/pattern please let me know, i'd like to recover my c10 seat in that style.

There is your water pump. Gates p/n 42099, $52.79. I have ordered two water pumps form rock auto. Same quality you will get from NAPA, and $30 less.

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
Draco,
I'm not sure how much differance there was between the GMC and Chevy when it came to seat fabric/style pattern. But I "had" an unmolested seat until Katrina hit. SMS fabrics still sells the correct pattern for the GMC same stlye and same imprint (I have a swath of it). You can see pictures ofthe seat in my webshots link below. http://rides.webshots.com/album/414821495aUkBZE Jake

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
Thanks for all the comments guys! Very excited about going camping in something cool! Picked up the waterpump and new battery yesterday. So I'm into this thing over a grand now and it's still not at my house! Leaving friday morning for Redding. They have a cruise that night, then carshow Saturday and Sunday! I'm hoping to just get the inner dually tire repaired and not having to buy new tires before driving it home on Sunday.

Re: I'm going camping! 1966 GMC
GOOD ON YA TONY! Don't be surprised if it has a marine type battery switch that says "1, 2 ,both, off. AND a switch to the power back to the coach or camper part. That way, if you run the battery down while back in the coach enjoying yourselves, the other battery stays hot to start the beast. Your "house battery" might be located in the engine bay or back in the coach, but, for sure, there will be a switch. HAVE FUN!
