700R4 leaking oil out of speedo cable
Tranny is out of an 86 , so it's mechanical speedo. Do I need a different cable? Is there an adapter or something?

Re: 700R4 leaking oil out of speedo cable
The speedo gear housing that is held into the transmission with a 10mm bolt, has a seal in it. If you remove the speedo cable, and remove the bolt, and the small rectangle clamp, you can remove the speedo drive gear housing. The housing and gear will pull right out, and some fluid will run out also. Look carefully into the housing at the end where the speedo cable attaches. There should be a small round seal, and a small wire ring that holds the seal in place. Replace the seal, and the oring that goes around the outside of the housing. Check the end of the gear that is closest to the seal, and make sure that it does not have a groove worn in it. If it does the gear should be replaced as well. The gears are different colors, to specify the number of teeth on them. get a gear the right color, BUT, count the teeth on both to be sure it is correct.

Re: 700R4 leaking oil out of speedo cable
Thanks , I have that all apart and had the seal & ring out, it didn't look damaged but maybe it's just worn out. Is it just the ring that holds the seal in tight to stop the oil from leaking out?
