So I was tearing down my 454 that I had recently got when I noticed something was wrong. I first noticed something was up when there was a freeze plug missing. Then popped the vavle covers off and noticed that the front two cylinders had rust on the head.

Pulled the heads and didnt notice anything else. Tore it completely down to a bear block....thats when i finally noticed it...a crack.

Attached is a pic of the crack. Do you guys think that it can be fixed? Or is it time to save up and find a new block?

Unless you know a really good welding shop and a machine shop i would say scrap it. I see you already have the chain on it so just toss it over the side of the boat

chain was on it cuz i was getting ready to store it till i had money to get it rebuilt, but then i toss it in the back of muh truck to take it to a shop to see about fixing it. But its the weekend so I thought i would ask you guys first.

Do you guys think I should try to get my money back for the motor or atleast part of it? I pmed the guy who I got it from once I noticed that the freeze plug was missing. He replied and said that the motor ran strong last he knew.

Was there water in the oil when you drained it. looks like you got burned on that one. On the other hand the guy may not have known about it, but if he's a stand up person he would give you a refund or at least partial. JMHO.

a motor can run with a crack like that. try and work something out with him. also ask him if it was over heating.

Gee how did it run strong without coolant? Last I recall no freeze plug = no coolant = boat anchor if it runs more than about 3 minutes.

This is what the guy said when i asked him if it ran before he pulled it:

"It ran a while ago before I pulled it, but the starter and igintion wires were all rotted and **** so I didn't even try to work on it to start it. It should run o.k."

This is what he said when I told him there was a freeze plug missing:

"Why there is a freeze plug missing I do not know...that IS kind of weird. I know it ran and it ran strong also. "

Im going to go talk a machine shop after work today, just so i can talk to someone face to face and they can see the block for themselves. Then Ill pm the guy and see what he says.

Even if the guy doesnt want to give any of the money back it was still a good deal considering how much so of the parts are that we did get with it.

Here is what could have happened---it ran ok then stored with insufficent antifreeze. The block froze and cracked popping out the freeze plug in the process.
Freeze plugs are not there to release pressure when a block freezes but are actually part of the block casting process. They call them freeze plugs and do sometimes help avoid block damage from lack of antifreeze but are no real failsafe.
If you got the block with the freeze plug out of it, you paid good money for a bad block and the seller should make it right.

I work in a machine shop and I just showed the picture to one of our guys....it's not worth messing with.
The money you would sink into fixing this block would probably pay for another core block.

I had a SBC block that looked like that..I bought it as a good running engine...when I told the Total waste of skin that sold it to me about it..he said put it back together with new gaskets, and he would give me my money back...needless to say I told him to F off..he would of just sold it to some other poor sap..the only thing I used off of it was the crank..by the way..the block is toast...thats a serious crack, and if you have the block magged...im sure there will be more
