ignition bezel ?

is there a trick or special tool i need to remove the bezel and the whole switch. i was able to turn mine about 2 turns and it wont turn either way now.

Have you removed the ignition lock cylinder? It has to come out before the bezel will come off.

no i didnt pull it out. i may have already screwed up then. is there any way to remove the cylinder if it wont turn to the acc position?

i dont know it turned to the acc position one time right after i bought the truck and it hasnt turned any more. i need to replace the cylinder anyway because i want the doors to match keys.

What year is your truck?

Will the key turn to the on or start position?

Possibly the key isn't going in all the way. I would try spraying it with some penetrating oil and wiggle the key up and down as you insert it. Also try wiggling the key up and down slightly as you try to turn it.

it is a 71. it turns fine to start and run just not to acc position. i have sprayed it with pb before.

yea john i still have that cab. a buddy was coming to look at it 3 weeks ago and i havent seen him yet. first with cash gets it.

I would try wiggling the key up and down a little or pulling it out just a tad while you are turning it. If you can get it to turn to ACC follow the instructions below.

Turn the key to the left as far as it will go and insert a straightened paper clip or stiff wire into the hole in the face of the cylinder and “gently” push the spring loaded pin in. Turn the cylinder further to the left to remove it.

After you push the spring loaded pin in with the stiff wire and turn the cylinder further to the left you have to pull the wire out to finish turning it or it will bind. You can also turn it too far after you pull the wire out. That is when you have to wiggle the cylinder back and forth a little bit. If you wiggle it too much the pin will pop back out and you will have to start over. You should not have to put excessive turning pressure on it or push down hard on the spring loaded pin. Gentle and patience are the key words here...

thanks locdoc i will try that tomorrow. the cylinder is worn badly the key will come out with the key in any position and about any key will turn it.

well i tried to get the cylinder out today. it turned left one time i put the pin in and turned further. when i tried to pull the cylinder out the key just pulled out. any other ideas. i have a parts truck with what looks like a new switch in it but no key for it.

I have some misc keys for GM..

Yeah stick a pin in the hole and turn left and maybe pull jiggle, it takes a bit of time maybe epoxy the key in there if you 'just GOTTA' get it out.??

Drill a 1/4" hole about 3/4" in. After that it will be pretty easy to remove the cylinder.

Take the key out and bend a hook on the end of a piece of stiff wire, put it in the key hole and pull the lock cylinder out.

This is interesting because in my 72 GMC, it has NEVER gone into the ACC position. So is my switch screwed up?
I just never gave it any thought.

Unless your ignition switch was replaced with a '67 or early '68 switch it should have an accessory position.

Try turning it to the left using the instructions above.

Mine did the same thing. Took some experimenting, but putting some side pressure on it allowed me to get the cylinder out (my key would come out in any position also). New key cylinder at NAPA was $7, but it wouldn't match your doors.

So Lock Doc,
If this IS correct, would it be the Lock Cylinder or the Switch that is bad?
(Come to think of it, the swith IS kinda "sticky" when I start it up.)

If I do get a new Lock Cylinder, will my local Lock Shop be able to key the ignition cylinder, to match the Door locks?
Currently they all work with the same key.

Currently they all work with the same key.

It could be either one, or it could be that the key is worn. If the key wears out the internal parts of the lock will wear with it. Since 99% of the time the key is turned to the "on" & "Start" positions the lock will continue to function that direction. When you want to turn the lock to the accessory position the internal parts are not worn in that direction so the key will not work. That's why wiggling it will usually get it to turn. If I were you I would take your key to a good locksmith shop and ask them to cut a new key to the GM factory specifications or + a few thousanths, and see if it will work. If your key is worn really bad it may be hard to do that though.

Yes, any good locksmith should be able to re-key a new ignition cylinder to match the doors. If you can't find anyone in your area to do it let me know.
