im ashamed to admit it

my sons friend and I went to cruise night tonight at Raceway Park in Englishtown NJ and just for poops and giggles we decided to race our beaters down the quarter mile.....
Bear in mind that Andy works for me andhe is paying off his truck to me as he needs it working for me..
Anywho what really hurts is that he beat me driving his stinking F 150 albeit by a fraction of a second.. ive got a 305/250 he has a 302/4speed
So what i need is some ideas as to what I can do to my truck ( cheaply ) to win next time... I am posting pics of both trucks and the time slip lol ideally id liketo do better on the time/speed without sacrificing too much mpg not that im planning on racing this truck every weekend but id like to have better pickup time even while getting on the highway and all

running tonight i had a new carb ( edelbrock 650), new gas filter, octane boost, new air filter, wires are pretty new as are plugs

What about a new manifold to go with your new carb? Not too expensive and might help your get up and go daily driving. Just a thought.

Re: im ashamed to admit it

Good Morning,

Have the distributor recurved for performance and check timing for a total of 34-36 total. without the vacuum advance factored in. Yes headers with a good performance dual exhaust system that would include a balance pipe or x pipe. Plus a high rise intake manifold like an Edelbrock Performer RPM would do nicely.

God Bless, Terry

Sounds like you could put yourself out of business in one bad night at the track.

Re: im ashamed to admit it

Move the advance timing hose from ported to full vacuum. I do it at the track!

Raise your starting RPMs to at least 1000 or enough to start breaking your tires loose. Remove the air cleaner or turn the lid upside down. Remove the tail gate!! It's extra weight and drag.

Swap gears. they can be found in a junk yard for cheap, like 50-75 bucks. if you have a road gear, swap out to a 3.73. best bang for your buck.

Re: im ashamed to admit it

here is what we used to do, should give you 10-15hp. Either remove the air box or attch enough flexable hose to get the end of it down under that truck. Duck tape one end to the air box and the other into the frame facing the front of the truck. Next get 5 gallons for racing fuel. If this doesn't work , do what I did and change out the 305 for a 454.. that will get him. lol

jet fuel (jetA) will not run in a piston type gasoline motor. only have avgas can. and that is used in propeller type reciprocating aircraft motors. avgas the only thing that is. is a higher octane gas. (100oc)

and with a stock motor with low compression adding such high of octane will give you no performance gain. it will actually take away.

Actually no, the truck was designed with the tailgate on. It actually has been proven that without the tailgate on you will get less gas mileage. Which in turn means you're moving slower. Added weight's a myth too, since it was designed with it on, it's designed to have that weight factored in to what it has to move. Simply switch it to a fiberglass one if you're not going to use it as a work truck anymore, or switch to something a little more durable if you're doing light work with it.

Just find a good, cheap exhaust place near you, if I can ever get some headers for my truck and about $150 I can get a really good custom, dual-pipe done on my truck. Tailored exactly how I want it for looks, pipe diameter, etcetera. I also have an Edlebrock Street Avenger 600cfm carb, and their performance series intake manifold. Once I replace the dizzy and the plugs and wires, my truck may see a track soon.
