Re: strange ticking noise!
My first thought is exhaust leak, from what I have experienced. For me it was worse when under a load.

Re: strange ticking noise!
If it's a slight tick... probably none.

Re: strange ticking noise!
dust shield on tranny can tick
sagging motor mount can cause fan to hit bottom of shroud causing ticking shock absorbers balljoints tierod ends can all tick if not greased properly on a regular basis

Re: strange ticking noise!
uggggggggg adjusted valves, put in new distributer and adjusted timeing to specs. thought i had it licked was driving great no noises pushed it pretty hard to. I was stoked decided to take my wife and son out t dinner got 10miles into the drive 50mph and walla its back. It was stoping when i would get down to 30or so but not this time. I pulled over put it in park still there popped the hood and it sounded like it came from right side of motor. Finished my drive ate dinner and headed back no tick untill i drove 10-15 miles 50mph again got back in town 30 mph again and freaking tick goes away back to 45 50 on back road to my house nothing!!!
When i parked it in the garage i left it runing got out the stethoscope to try to here any odd ticking or any noise for that matter none. Help me please also what kind of oil pressure should i be haveing with a hi volume oil pump? i get about 10-15 at idle and average 25-40 under load. |

Re: strange ticking noise!
You've got a sticky lifter. Piece of dirt in it probably. Plugs the oil hole once in awhile. Lifter doesn't pump up completely. Limits oil to the rocker. Mine does the same. Comes and goes. It's #6 exhaust on my six banger. Next time if you catch it pull the breather or pvc valve out of the cover. See if it's louder.

Re: strange ticking noise!
Disconnect the speedo cable and see if it goes away. I'm leaning toward lifter on this one, but disconnecting the speedo cable is free and easy, so I'd start there.

Oh, you're asking about your truck! Oh, my bad. I second the speed-o cable myself. Exhaust leaks in my experience tend to be more pronounced with engine load than speed unless it's a major leak. If that were the case you'd know it. |

Re: strange ticking noise!
Got it! dumped out the 10-30 synthetic oil for 20-50 casteroil gtx at the advice of a friend. put 150 miles on her and nothing now to take it back to the exhaust shop to fix the exhaist leaks.
