Re: Cross Country Trip....

Day 5

Into Az!
Its getting close now...

About mid day I spotted a man on foot in the middle of nowhere. He's hard to see, but you can spot him above the fence post in the fore ground:

I thought about stopping to make sure he was okay ( there were no towns in either direction for at least 20 miles or more ), but after passing through those heavily guarded checkpoints in New Mexico and Az, I thought better of it and kept going.

Once I got into AZ it was just a red eyed race to the finish line. I'd really enjoyed the trip, but it was damn hot and I was ready to get out of the truck.
Driving thru Tuscon, Tempe, and Phoenix weren't bad. I got a glimpse of three nice 60-66's while driving through AZ. When I was in phoenix I saw a really sweet looking 456 truck with original blue paint and custom cab chrome driving east on I-10. I wanted to snap a pic but traffic was too heavy to try.

Finally Home!
We rolled in around 2pm on Friday afternoon tired, dirty, and so glad to have made it.
I can't believe we're here in one piece. I got out of the truck and had to break out in a hard laugh. We made it. I felt like I drove a horse drawn wagon across the west, but we made it. I got the old girl unloaded and rolled her into her new home for a rest. When I was done with all the busy work I took a few minutes to reflect on the trip. Its been one hell of an experience, one that I wouldn't hesitate to make again with the old girl. What did I learn from all of this?
America is a big beautiful country, and I love my old Chevy.

Re: Cross Country Trip....

I'm glad to see you made it there with no big issues. That was nice of you to help the ladies out. I would have done the same. I'm pretty sure I would have kept trucking when I saw the guy out on his own too. You never know anymore, it's sad but I've gotten myself in to some bad situations picking up in need people before and I better feel real good about picking someone up now. By the way, nice pad and good luck with the new venture and life! Ryan.

Welcome to Arizona I hope you checkout that link to Cruisin' Arizona. Although things are kind of winding down now. The heat is coming, June kind of kicks your winter. Things will pickup soon enough, and I will be on the lookout for your black n white shorty. Anyway a heartfelt welcome.

Re: Cross Country Trip....

Glad you made it! I loved living in Arizona (Cave Creek for a year and Flagstaff for a couple.) I used to see Navajos just walking all of the time in the most desolate of places- used to stop and give them rides- been a lot of years since then, I'd probably think twice about it now.

Re: Cross Country Trip....

Thank God you and Fred are safe and home! We were praying for you and Fred here in Texas. I think the trip you made has to be the hardest on any vehicle for the heat alone if not the distance. Fred is a great companion and he did you right with his watchful eyes. just one question, was he there for your protection? were you there for his? or was it yall both were there for the trucks protection? Great story and fantastic journey!

Now the value of your truck just increased as you pulled onto the driveway your new house. More of a reason to keep her.

Indeed! How many of us are sitting here thinking "man, I wish that truck were for sale?"

I hope it never happens, but should the time ever come that you must part ways with her, Jon, please be sure to send BruthaMan a private message.

Thanks man , glad all went well. I know I had fun following along.
Could have had more pictures along the way, but I have been to AZ ,and Texas, and I know it is not very dramatic photography after awhile of the same ol stuff.
Thanks for finishing the"most interesting story on the web" and now,,go have the beer.

Also glad you did not need the emergency responder team here from the forum , but I can see we are prepared to help and ready at all times!! Salute !!!

Hahaha This truck has edged its way into the realm of pricelessness for me, she's like a part of the family, especially after this
