Serpentine Conversion Help

Guys and Gals,

I am about to do the serpentine conversion on my 71 350 and the final step is the radiator hoses. I know there are a few of you that have sucessfully completed this task and I am asking for some assistance. What upper and lower hoses did you use? I am kinda pressed for time and dont really need to make a million trips to the parts store to see if they have something that fits. I tried the upper hose last nite and its off of a 92 GMC and the diameter is too small. So if anyone has this information and would like to share please help me out.

I went through alot of the topics last nite and only one post had a top hose part number which online is no good anymore.

I go out of my way for alot of members to get pics and research alot and now I need someone to do that for me......

If this doesnt work I guess Ill PM a bunch of people and see if they return it.

Thanks,

Smitty

Re: Serpentine Conversion Help

If you go to your parts store order the upper and lower hose for a mid 90's GMC truck that came with serp brackets. small block. 96 GMC 4 WD 350 truck should work. The upper hose can be difficult and has to be rather long to reach. A swivel thermo housing can make it a bit easier to deal with. The lower hose is a fight regardless but a few cold ones and some common sense will get it installed.

Re: Serpentine Conversion Help

Try these threads. Granted they are referring to 4x's, but that shouldn't make a difference. On the bottom one grab a Gates 20842. I have it mounted already on my setup so I know it works for sure.

Upper hose XL 1171

Lower hose Gates 20842

Re: Serpentine Conversion Help

Thanks Guys,

I pulled the 1171 and 20842 plus a few more numbers out of 3 pages of threads, re-ran the 1171 without the XL and found it.

Sammy,
I would have to recheck on the mid 90's stuff, I got a hose from a 92 and the radiator diameter was way too small.

It would be nice to just go there and get one trips worth of parts without having to do it many times....I am trying to do this conversion and move and get my AC fixed......

I will list all the parts that i got for the next guys so people dont have to guess.

Thanks Again

Smitty

Re: Serpentine Conversion Help

If you have trouble finding a hose that works. Get a piece of wire and model the length and shape of the hose you would need. Get the hose ID which would be the OD on the water pump and radiator. Armed with this information go to your local parts counter and try to find a hose that matches your criteria. If anything it will save you from getting the wrong part.

Re: Serpentine Conversion Help

Sdailey,

Do you remember what year pump you put on? I bought a pump off the engine I pulled the brackets off of and its the same pump for the v8.

Thanks,

Re: Serpentine Conversion Help

I'm doing the same conversion but have not gotten to the hoses yet. I have used 1996 chevy k1500 for all parts like water pump, power steering pump, idler, alt, etc. I'll be watching this for hoses.

Forum member Johnoro just got done with this. Maybe he'll give up the hoses he used. I think I will see him this weekend and will post the part numbers he used if I can get them.

Smitty,

I bought my serpentine setup as a kit. The part number for the water pump is 88894005 (Water pump kit). Search part number 12497698 through the link below and it'll show all the part numbers for the kit. Hope this helps.

Re: Serpentine Conversion Help

I know I said pics, but after I broke pushrod (my own fault) the pics wouldn't be pretty, so tomorrow after I fix the pushrod pics are coming. Here is my parts list that completed my serpentine set up. This was pretty easy and I found a new way to use my old lower radiator hose with the help of a 24 inch cresent wrench, so the lower hose in no issue. i bent the frame down just a tiny bit and the old hose fit perfect......My brackets/pulleys came off a 95 chevy blazer and it had no smog pump. Just make sure if you go to a junk yard take a power steering pulley remover or you wont get the bracket off without destroying the old pump. There is a bolt back behind the pump on the head there you need to get to.

1. Power steering hose. I picked up a 70911 from advance auto for a 75 chevy c10 and it fit perfect, just use the hose fitting bolt out of your old pump.
2. Water pump came off a 95 blazer from autozone CWP-715.
3. Power steering pump, 95 blazer from advance SP17094.
4. Alternator (most expensive part) from autozone 92 GMC DLG1345-6-7.
5. My truck has guages so i need the adapter harness with the resistor in it, got it from rock auto S792. Then jumped the regulator.
6. Thermostat gasket for 92 GMC from autozone 35062.
7. AC bypass pulley (for now) 95 blazer, rock auto 34152.
8. Thermostat housing 92 GMC from rock auto 10147884.
9. Gates belt 95 blazer rock auto, K060956.
10. Idler pulley, 95 blazer rock auto, 19190148.
11. Tensioner, 95 blazer rock auto, 88909598.
12. Upper radiator hose, had to modify to fit autozone, 1171.
13. 3/4 heater hose 4ft. I have an ac truck.

I bought alot of AC Delco parts and had my brackets and pulley's powdercoated, but you could do this pretty cheap if you bought part store parts and painted it your self. I didnt drill in my head for one bolt, but I have the bracket that bolted to the water pump, so everything is pretty strong.

Here are the pics,

The first one is what I started with, then the new parts started showing up. Then I had everything in place and finally AC was completed. It was 90 here today and 40 inside the cab (I have a thermometer in the vent) 38 this evening.....

Love it...

Re: Serpentine Conversion Help

Smitty, Can you provide some additional details on how you retrofitted the AC to work with the new pump. What compressor did you go with? From the picture it does not look like the R4 radial. Part numbers if you have them? Some detailed pics of the critical connections would be much appreciated. The AC guy I normally use just scratched his head when I asked him about this. I'll have to find someone else to take care of this. Thanks, Lee

Re: Serpentine Conversion Help

Here are the part numbers for my AC setup, I can do pics, but send me a email address, I hate sizing these pics to get them to fit.

Evaporator came from a 96-2005 Chevy Astro Van (Id have to take the case a part to get a number off it) but it fit into old case with no mods.
Accumalator PN 33103
R4 conversion brackets from Old Air products 40-4218
New Belt from NAPA 060984 (bigger clutch than original)
25 Amp relay for pusher fan
FLX-112 fan from summit racing for condensor, its a pusher 12 in fan
AC Parts warehouse out of TX sanden comp SD7H15

The ac shop made the lines and added the orfice tube. So far so good.

Re: Serpentine Conversion Help

Smitty: Which end of the top hose did you have to trim? That might work for my ac retrofit.

Thanks

I did more from the radiator side, but I took a little off the engine side.

I'll go take a look at one tomorrow. That might be just what I need.
