Unusual 46-47 1-ton
Mods, if this isn't permissable, please delete.
I posted questions for info help on a '47 Chevy truck I bought on the '47+ forum. It's an interesting cross-over '46-47, so need to find additional info on them before cutting it up. It might be worth saving????? Thanks, Cayoterun

So it's a '47 1st Design? What questions do you have? I just had to argue with a guy,who's owned Advance Design trucks since the '70s,who was claiming that style started in '48. I guess he considers all the '47 2nd designs to be '48s. He owns my old '55 1st design and he calls it a '54. It's all about technicalities,I guess. But yeah,the '41s ran into the '47 model year.

This truck is a 1-ton dually, with a pickup style steel bed. The bed measures 9' L X 53" W inside. Has insets inside bed to accomodate duals. It has a '47 title, but '46 sheetmetal. Has been disassembled completly. Data plate missing, but may be in the parts boxes.
I had planned to cut the bed up to fit another truck I'm working on, but after getting it home, decided I'd like to know more about the truck, in case it was a low production run, and didn't want to cut up a truck that might be worth restoring. Some in the '47+ forums has suggested it might be a military surplus truck. That could sure make sense. I hope I don't cause confusion by asking in both forums. Thanks, Cayoterun

Well,the '41-46 style did carry into '47. I love those big heavy pickups. See my avatar? I'd say they were less than common,yet available to anyone. Most probably went to a specialized body by the time they needed a truck that HD. Here is an earlier model truck like that:

That sure indicates there's not many left. I'm not going to do any cutting on this truck, at least for a while. I think I'd have about enough parts left to put the truck together after I finish the monstrosity I'm working on. I haven't looked close at another '46 grain truck I can get, but maybe the cab on it is better. The rest of the sheetmetal is still in good shape.
The '46 single wheel you posted is a dead ringer, except this truck has different wheels, but feel sure these wheels were original, unless I learn different from the po. At my age, I planned to kick this addiction, after getting the V-12 truck running. If someone out there was serious about restoring it, let's talk. As said, the truck is totally disassembled, but I and others have put together a lot worse. I think I'll call the Jim Carter truck parts guy in K.C. Mo. and see if he could be the same guy who has the restored truck in your pic. This bed would work great on the V-12, but I could use a pickup bed, and cut it down instead, or build a bed. I still have lot's more work to do before ready. We'll see what happens. Special K, and others, thanks for the help you've given/give on this. Cayoterun

There is a guy in our area that put a Cummins in a 40 Chevy 1 ton. I haven't talked to him but want to see it up close.

Interestingly the 46 and early 47 were identical. It was not until mid year of 1947 that the advanced desighn truck become available. The early 47 is a rare truck and worth a chunk of change when people know what they are looking at. All 46 parts fit it. A few of the 46-47 parts were used on the late 47. Transmission is one of them. It's completely diferent from a 48-53 transmission in the way it functions. Instead of first being the only unsyncronized gear in it all the gears were. There should be a lever on the 4 speed to go into reverse. Mechanically that truck was the same as the late 47 but it felt different from it.

I had the 4 speed granny in my 41 and found a 1940 three speed top loader and it is syncronized except going into first. The three speeds were syncronized in 1935. You are correct you have to pull up the lever to put it into reverse. I don't miss the old double clutching 4 speed.
