4 6 Drop

hi guys im new to the site

Well i have a 78 stepside chevy and i im doing a 4 in drop in the front and 6 in the back. i was told by a few people to do the flip kit 1st then cut the notch in because i rear end will move back when i do the flip kit.

by trade im a auto tech but i never done a flip kit or a c notch. lol i took a look at the kit and does not look hard at all. like i said i dont want to mess up but by looking at it it doesn't look like you could mess it up.

i just dont want to **** up so if you could give me any tips that would work great.

so should i do the flip kit 1st then the c notch?

The kit is a mcgaughys
who has used this kit before.

Re: 4 6 Drop

No you can not use the stock rear shocks with a flip kit.
The rear end doesnt actually move back with a flip kit, the springs lean forward so to stay on a plum line on a 5 or 6 in drop the rear has to be mounted about an inch back on the spring itself.

Re: 4 6 Drop

You can use the stock shocks with shock relocation brackets. I believe some flip kits may come with them....

Re: 4 6 Drop

I used the McGaughys kit and was very happy with it. I did my flip kit first before I made my marks to cut out for my c notch. You don't have to do the c notch but I would highly recommend doing so because you never know down the road what you may run in to or want to haul. You can get a set of toxic drop shocks for the price of a descent set of stock shocks. It's worth doing all the extra work to do it right.

Re: 4 6 Drop

so today i did the back end
but im having trouble with the front my stock rotors dont wanna work with my new drop spindles. so i looked up and it said something that i need 1 1/4 in rotors.
so what should i do go to the parts store and check out some rotors and see witch ones work? or what year rotors could i just get so it would work?

the rotors looked like they where going to work its just that they dont slide all the way back so i can only get the nut in about half way. not safe to drive
so what tips do u guys have?
thanks

Re: 4 6 Drop

Drop spindles have to be ordered for what size rotors you have. If you have spindles for 1 1/4" rotors you must have 1 1/4" rotors. If swapping the spindles for 1" isn't a option you will have to find 1 1/4" rotors and calipers.

Re: 4 6 Drop

X2.
You must match the drop spindles to the rotors, calipers and bearings.
If your spindles are for 1-1/4" rotors,... ask the parts guy for 1973 rotors.
(They only came in the HD version from 73-80)
From 81-87 you could get either the Light Duty 1" rotors or the HD 1-1/4" version.

C20 = 3/4 ton 8-lug rotors
C10 = 1/2 ton 5-lug HD 1.25" rotors or 1/2 ton 5-lug lt.duty 1.00" rotors

I agree with everyone else wrong Spindles for your rotors. Summit should have them if not, check out DJM Suspension. That's where I got mine.

Re: 4 6 Drop

Your truck sets perfect!

Do you have any rubbing up front?
You may need to run a shorter front tire.

Re: 4 6 Drop

it looks great, i had to run a smaller front tire as my first time i backed out it sliced CHUNKS off my sidewall tread of my tire.

Re: 4 6 Drop

Looks great! Smaller tire up front might be in order but that is easy enough. I really like the look. How does it ride? Did you pull the bump stops? Do you think you will need to notch the frame?

Re: 4 6 Drop

i took off the bump stops and then that gave me around 4in of space and just added a small pancake bump stop. since i have air shock i just added good amount of air. the ride was great i been driving it since friday. for the front i just rolled the fenders so i could keep my tires and they dont rub when i turn.
