"Eagle by Chevy" dealer option in 72

Hey guys, I went to a guys house yesterday and was looking at some loaded Big Block trucks that I was interested in and he had this 72 sittin off in the weeds. He explained that in 72 Chevrolet had to figure out how to get rid of the last of these models when the 73-up body style came out. This is what Chevrolet came up with. Graphics on the side but the tailgate was a big plaque screwed on I think.

How 70's is that man! Pretty Groooovy! lol Thought you might enjoy it.

Re: "Eagle by Chevy" dealer option in 72

I don't know about his reasoning for these graphics but Chevy did have several graphic packages in the late 70s for a number of their lineup. Graphics were offered on Vega panels, blazers, pickups, etc. I'm sure one of the guys will post up a brochure to show what was available back then.
The late 70s was a "mod" period.

Isn't that a 71? I say that because you can make out the Disc Brake decal on the tailgate.

Good eye. And,the step bumper isn't a '72 either. I see the mirrors have been changed. I'm not sure if these were only in '72. But,I know you could buy the kit from the parts dept. GM may have "thought" they had to do things to "get rid" of the '72s,but how wrong they were. It wasn't long after the square bodies were out that I started getting the,"I wish I never traded mine in"s.

I never believed it was to help move the left over 72 trucks personally... it was just a time of poor taste.

Poor taste indeed. I grew up in the 70s. In addition to these lousy decals, we had 8-tracks, leisure suits and disco.

If there was something that wouldn't sell on the dealers lots in that era it was the Superbirds and Daytonas with wings and nose cones. Now you have to pay 100k + to buy one.

Yup. '72 with the Eagle Pattern. White if I recall.

I would give my eye teeth for decal set
but then again I'm a nut for any type of graphics.

Here is a thread about one Randy (teeitup) had. It was posted in the classifieds for quite a while and he couldn't sell it so he finally parted it out.

Not sure what you mean by this, those cars rarely saw a dealers showroom let alone a lot. There were only 500 Daytonas made and less than 2000 Superbirds, both exactly the number that were required by NASCAR rules, plus or minus a few, to qualify as a production car in 1969 and 1970. Almost all of which were special ordered. In the case of the Superbird that means that only half the Plymouth dealerships ever saw one (that was the rule, 1 for every 2 active dealerships to qualify as a production car). The Daytona (1969 rules) was 500 to qualify as a production car, they built 503, there less than 20% of Dodge dealerships ever saw one. These cars are some of the few American cars that have virtually never depreciated in value and were worth more than their purchase price 5, 10 or 20 years after they were built, almost unheard of for an American car. They are however worth less now than they were at their peak several years ago when you couldn't touch one for well, well into the 6 figures. I can't think of anything other than Shelby and Boss Mustangs that have been as consistently sought after as these, from day one.

Actually, it's a fact that sales were pretty sluggish for SuperBirds. Most people that wanted winged cars had already bought the 69 Charger Daytona. Some Superbirds sat on lots for 2 years, and some were even converted back to regular Road Runners with the rear wings still on them.
