convert K5 or buy C5?

Well here is the $1,000 question buy an original 71 2wd or convert a 71 K5. The C5 is rough but numbers matching needs alot of work to be done to make drivable. the 71K5 is nice complete but still a project and $1,000 more. what would you do?

Re: convert K5 or buy C5?

I'd buy the original C5. Partly because I hate seeing these trucks cut up, but mainly because an original 2WD fixed up would be worth a lot more than a 4x4 converted to 4x2.

True. They also never made a C1, 2, 3, 4, and I think 5 Corvette. People just started calling them that and the name stuck.

Re: convert K5 or buy C5?

Hmmmm, If your willing to go with #'s matching restore job to origonal, and not cut it up. go with the C5.. But if you want to do some crazy stuff that is near impossible to get back to origonal. Go with the K5 and convert it. Just my opinion, but with how rare a true C5 is. I would hate to see it chopped and hacked up.. Even if it's friggin awsome..
You can make back most (if not all) your $1000 bucks by selling the axles and trasfer case.. I bought a donor truck 2wd LWB for the frame and running gear and basicaly swapped the bodies. I shortend the 2wd frame for the blazer. But, the LW Box of course didn't fit for the K5 frame. I sold all of it as a running mud and/or 4x4 truck. with a sheet of dimond plate covering the rear wheels. I got my money and then some. The guy that bought it shortend the box somehow and he runs it still. Just saw it a few weeks ago. Hardest part was getting the body mounts put on in the correct place.. Some day I will do a write up. I ran into a bent frame on the new to me 2wd frame, so I had some extra issues. But the Blazer is just waiting for my garage to be cleaned out and start work on her again.. it's been a few to many years.

Re: convert K5 or buy C5?

lolso no C5!! ive owned a few 4x4 but would like a matching 2wd blazer to my 4x4. been looking for awhile and 2wd seem hard to come by around here. found one that is rough but i think worth saving. still not sold on either one yet. i just know im almost done with my 4x4 build and cant wait to start a 2wd build. need to research more. my thoughts are a mild custom look mostly lowered and fuel injected 350

Re: convert K5 or buy C5?

Another option is what I did, I took a almost perfectly restored 4wd and
thrashed it and started all over on a 2wd frame. Since mine wasn't a #'s
matching frame off resto I didn't care. Now I got a 2wd Square Corvette
with a 4wd body. (Only main difference is the removable Trans hump)

This would mean buying 2 Blazers, or 1.5 like I did, to achieve the result.

Re: convert K5 or buy C5?

I think it really depends on your direction of the build. Like some said, if you're going to cut it up to lay frame, no point in getting a more expensive 2wd that needs more work when you'll have to change all the suspension over anyways.

On a side note, my Vin starts with a "C", is that how you can tell it's a "real" 2wd?

I read that truck pans work as well as bed floors for the back of the tub.

Re: convert K5 or buy C5?

Well i decided to buy a 2wd came across this from a friend that has had it for awhile stashed away known him 7 years and never knew about it, until he asked if I wanted buy one. i said looked at it for a good while left came back looked at it 3 more times the floor scares me. but i figured these dont come around that often so i bought it gonna be asking a lot of questions on this one. plans are to get the floor repaired and than pull the body off and clean it all up they notched the rear as u can see cut the frame horns off cut holes the trailing arm crossmember to allow exhaust to be ran through. also has tons of undercoat on the frame so all of that needs to come off. what do u guys think of it?

Find 1956 Cameos build thread; it'll be helpful and ease the butterflies at the same time. The C in that serial number is gold(imo).

It looks to me like it has a 6 lug rearend. If it hasn't been swapped, maybe you have a 70?
