Stick is fun to drive, but it can get old when you're driving in traffic. I like automatics in these trucks.

Re: auto vs stick, what do you prefer

I hate shifting. Did that enough when I was a kid. Im a field tech and early on my company cars were almost all manual shift too. Give me an auto any day.... Well maybe if I had a hot rod of some sort a shift might be fun lol (wishy washy here)

Almost forgot, my K20 is 4sp, but I dont drive it a bunch so I live with it. I bought an auto set up for it yeas ago, yes its still sitting there.

Re: auto vs stick, what do you prefer

My 85 has a stick and my daily driver is a stick. I though it would suck in traffic at first but it become second nature and something I don't think about. I wish I could convert the Avalanche to stick but the wife doesn't.

stick if its fun to drive otherwise. auto if its just a stocker.
only reason i have an auto in my truck is because i use it to tow my boat. its nice to be able to let someone else park the trailer.

Re: auto vs stick, what do you prefer

Auto for me. I enjoy driving the 72 with the 4l60, it shifts faster than I could. Been driving a 6spd Cummins for years, that has turned me off of driving manual in a truck. Give me a manual if its an older sports car

Re: auto vs stick, what do you prefer

Its not a Hot-Rod if it doesn't have a stick!

That being said I love manuals but it has to be the right set up. Those old Chevy's don't have the right set up to be fun to drive. The clutch is super hard to push, and the shift is so long. If you can do it right then do a stick. I am putting a new process 833 in my truck and the bell housing has a slave for a hydraulic clutch. So I am going to use it. It will make it a lot easier.

Just my .02 cents

Not worth much.

Re: auto vs stick, what do you prefer

I drive a 5 speed everyday, I would much rather have a manual transmission...BTW the truck I'm building will have a 4L60E because I got one cheap. it will have paddle shifters though for when i want to hot rod.

EDIT: I agree with the above post also, seems the stock setup is not really stick friendly, especially with no handbrake. Modern Cars are a lot more manual friendly with light hydraulic clutches and smooth shifters.

The stock clutch setup on a old truck works, but not very good when compared to the later stuff. and the 3 on the tree is novel, but not ideal either.

Hot Rod= stick-floor only

Driver cruiser=auto

Bracket cars should have autos for consistency

Re: auto vs stick, what do you prefer

I love driving a stick (even on the tree is fun for me), but in traffic with summer heat and no a/c....it gets old...quick! For regular driving I prefer a stick in the snow but otherwise auto.

Re: auto vs stick, what do you prefer

I have both a stick truck and a auto truck. I like both, but in the end I'm a drag racer at heart, so in the end I much prefer having an automatic.

Re: auto vs stick, what do you prefer

Had to be a manual in my younger days... of course, back then we referred to automatics as "slushboxes" for a reason.

Now, automatics are worlds better and I am much older. I'll take a good auto box any day for normal driving.

Re: auto vs stick, what do you prefer

Either or. LOL Ive had nuthing but auto's for many years. (Aside from my motorcycle.) But learned on a stick. I am thinking a stick in these old trucks would be fun. A stock automatic seams not to be able to take much abuse. But if they are built too, they are expencive, especialy to fix. But my wife and a clutch would be a bad idea. So if I put a stick in my old Blazer,, the wife will never ask to drive. OK, I just made my mind up. Stick.

all the youger pups, like my son...say "sticks and you have to do what"... so!!

Re: auto vs stick, what do you prefer

I've been a stick guy all my life, even learned on them. This truck is my second auto ever but on full size trucks I prefer stick.

My DD is a 6 speed manual and I love it.

I've only driven stick in trucks around parking lots when I worked at a garage, nothing long term, but I think I would like it. I love the stick in my cars!

Re: auto vs stick, what do you prefer

Can't beat the cool factor of a close ratio 4 speed. Not the big ol' low geared truck 4 speeds. But the convenience of a slushbox is way more betterer. Plus autos can be built bulletproof with an overdrive to boot!

My DD BMW has a stick and I wouldn't buy a BMW without one. I don't pay attention to it in traffic or any other situation but like the others said, its a modern trans, hydraulic clutch set up. I am not looking forward to rowin my 67 with the floor converted 3 speed. An auto is high on my wish list!
