Bought new gauges
Figured while I have the truck totally torn apart, might as well spend more cash and make more work for myself. I really like the look of these gauges and can't wait to pick up a new bezel to get these in.
These gauges are AutoMeter's Phantom series. On the suggestion of Mudder67 I bought the tach and speedo in 5" size and I went with the smaller gauges in 2 5/8". For the original tach hole I went with a 3 3/8" oil pressure gauage.

I bought the guages from Jeg's but forgot to order the fuel guage so got that one local.

Those are the exact same gauges I have in my truck. Unfortunately they were bought for another project so I only had the smaller oil pressure gauge and they don't make a larger fuel gauge. Eventually I will have to buy a larger oil pressure gauge to fill the middle hole on my dash and get a fuel gauge. It sucks not knowing when you are going to run out.

Here is a pic of mine. The part the guages are mounted on was painted metallic blue by a previous owner and was pretty badly scratched up. I sanded off the old paint and painted it flat black. It still looks bad in my opinion but it will do till I can afford a newer one. This is out of the truck of course but, I can get you pics of it installed if you are intrested.

Very little sanding progress lately - just haven't had time - pi$$ poor excuse, I know! Kids will be back in school soon, so I can start getting to the barn earlier in the evening. I must get it done!

those are very cool, what guages are all those? and is the speedo elec or mech? and if it is elec, how does that hook up? does it need that speed sensor thing on the trans?, does the mech one just use the exsisting cable? and how about the fuel gauge, did you have to get a diff sending unit or can it work with our stock ones? I am just curious how they all hook up, I have been eyeballing those at the AutoZone, but dont know what ones to get. oh and are they all illuminated (what color)..sorry for the ???s.

Hey Yukon Jack, How much did ya pay for the set? I've been wanting to do something very similar to that, after I get a nice paint job.
PS. I scored a very nice instrument panel for cheap at the junkyard because only the Fuel Gauge worked and the paint came off parts of the plastic. It was painted with automotive paint, It was painted a bluish green with lots of metal flake, and this wasnt no lazy paint job the whole thing one color, they left the 'chrome' on the outer edges and the rims of the circle cut outs for the gauges.

Wreck, these gauges are AutoMeter's Phantom series. I bought the tach and speedo in 5" size. Of course the tach is electric but I had to go with the mechanical speedometer as I have a manual tranny. It will use the existing speedo cable.
I went with the smaller gauges in 2 5/8". I am using a quartz clock and then an electric temp guage, I believe there are only electric fuel guages so that is what mine is and then of course the voltmeter is electric. The fuel gauge can work with the stock sending unit. I am having a custom tank built and it will use a correct ohm sending unit. The gauges are illuminated. They give two covers for the lights, can't recall what colors they are. For the original tach hole I went with a 3 3/8" oil pressure gauage that is mechanical. The gauges that require sending units, other than the fuel gauge, come with sending units. The gauges come with attachment brackets that look like they should work very well if you are going to attach the guages with the bezels on the outside of your instrument panel. I'm not sure how people attach them when they install them totally behind there panel. Mudder67 has been nice enough to offer to walk me thorough the wiring issues as he has done a great setup on his truck. Green72GMC, the gauges above run about $475 from Jeg's and my wife better not find that out or I'll have some explaining to do!

Yukon Jack $ Mudder67, gauges look great and I am doing that also. I just need to get that far first. One Question for both of you guys did the fuel gauge come with a sending unit, or what is required for use with that gauge? I am putting the tank under the bed. So I was wondering how the fuel gauge worked out for you guys. Thanks Landon

Nope, you are on your own for the fuel sending unit. The gauge I bought is the correct one for a stock sending unit in our trucks.

What about using a glovebox door for your purpose, paint the inside panel wrinkle black, and the outside rim the same color of your dash.. (just a thought), Get Thor50 to post another picture of his autometer set up in his dash cluster. It's absolutely one of the cleanest jobs I've seen... He installed the gauges behind the cluster instead of in front, they really look like they belong in the dash, not just added on. Ron |

how do the guages mount to the factory instrument panel? i eventually wanna do aftermarket guages but haven't researched them much
