Odd slot wheels?

I picked up a set of 16.5x9.75 6 lug aluminum slot wheels. This is the first set i have noticed in all my years. Anybody else have or seen a set? Maybe i just never paid attention before...

Re: Odd slot wheels?

They were somewhat common in the early to mid-70s. Although back then fairly common didn't mean you'd see more than a few trucks with them. It's like how the floatation tire option (10.00 tires) came mounted on 16.5 steel wheels. The funny thing back then, though,is it was fairly common to see 15" 8-lug wheels too. I have had both on trucks. The 16.5 6-lugs were steel. That is definitely an unusual set to find today.

Re: Odd slot wheels?

Too bad they seem to be slowly phasing out 16.5 tires, because there sure a lot of cool old wheels showing up. A lot of people would like to go back to the period look.

Re: Odd slot wheels?

Special-K, speaking of rare wheels... How common are the 8" wide 8 lug 16.5" steel wheels? They are just like the later 70's K20 wheels but they are wider.

I recently bought some and the guy told me they came on his 72 K20 that he bought new. I was wondering if they were in fact an option in 72 or if they were later?

Re: Odd slot wheels?

I had a set of the old 6 bolt ones and they are super rare to see. Even still, I couldn't hardly give them away for some reason.

They actually were a factory option. You'd order those when you ordered the 10.00-16.5 "flotation tire" option. They are pretty hard to come by and sought after by those who know what to look for. They've been phasing out 16.5 tires for about 20 years now. Meanwhile a zillion queer new sizes have come around. I just don't see them going anywhere since tire companies don't seem to mind taking on such a variety of diameters. There was really no need to and they did. anyway.

Re: Odd slot wheels?

This spring I tried to purchase 33x12.50x16.5 BFG All terrains and there was only 1 in stock in any ware house and no known time to produce more. I couldn't believe it.

That sucks. I better take good care of the ones on my truck (they still have the little nubs on em) I was thinking about picking up one for a spare.

Re: Odd slot wheels?

I hope BFG doesn't bug out on us. It's hard to believe companies can make such low production tires as the crap you see on donks, yet can't supply tires to all the thousands of trucks out there with factory wheels.

Re: Odd slot wheels?

I got a set on a 4x4 70 blazer I bought back in about 02 they were 6 lug 15x12. They had a big set of old Mickey Thompson 35s on them. I had a guy drive 350 miles for them and he paid 500 bucks for them even though the tires were shot and the rims needed to be polished.

That is an excellent point. I never thought about it that way.

I'm sure they will build them if there becomes enough need for them, which there has to be. Truck pullers are going through this right now with Interco. They quit making the Truxxus STS in 33x14.5 and 36x14.50 in any rim. It is crazy. They finally got like 100 orders and then made a run of them. That may be what it'll come to for our 16.5's. I even tried finding coopers that were hiding in ware houses. But I didn't want to spend the money to have 4 mismatched tires. Luckily I found 4 really nice 33x12.5x16.5 and turbine wheels for $500 on CL. When these tires are worn out, I may be stuck going with 18's or 20's. Just an FYI, tire manufacturers are starting to phase 16" tires too. That is a bad deal too!

Just stupid. Cange for the better is a good thing. Change for the sake of change or,even worse, the sake of marketing is just plain ass-9.

I just picked these up for my burb. I don't know that I've ever seen an 8 lug 15" wheel in person before.

I already have a set just like them but they are all 15x 8.5" and 6 lug. I'm saving them for when I can build/buy a 70 SWB.

Re: Odd slot wheels?

Humvee's still use 16.5" wheels, so they will be around for a while I bet, and I am planning on using some of the Humvee take offs you can get online for like 80$ each online.

I think they are less popular because of bead retention. At least offroad guys complain when they air down on 16.5's they can pop the beads easily because of the odd bead design many steel 16.5's have.

Re: Odd slot wheels?

I actually have a set like that on my sportbird blazer. 6 lug. Mine are 15s though. I had to remove a little material from my disc brake brackets up front. Love em, tho.
