Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Tonight after working on a customer's truck after work, I decided I had to do some thing to my truck. I fit and installed my fuel neck filler. I was hoping to have it turn out a shiny metal mirror like the pros, but not exactly. I'm happy with it. The patch I purchased from Infanti Machine, which I later found out was a site vendor. Excellent, excellent customer service and products. Here it is.

I got some body work done, and more primer sprayed. Doors are getting closer. About time!

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

I got the doors on the cab now! Of course the great primer I used is taking for ever to dry. Due to my lack of space, they couldn't sit where I had them to dry for a week. So when my brother placed them against the wall, what ever they were touching eventually smeared the primer. Nice huh? When I flipped the RH door to edge it, the boxes I sat the door on stuck to the out side skin. So now I've decided I will be completing some body work and just painting the truck. Fun fun. I did purchase new filler primer too. This old stuff is not for Iowa.

The other day Mathew (Brothers69C10) and I took my radiator support and inner fenders to get blasted. The guy called the other night and said he had them done. I had Mathew go pick them up since it was supposed to rain. They turned out nice. I have some rust to repair on the inner fenders, but not too bad.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

I hung the LH fender the other night. Let me know what you think of the rear of the wheel well opening. It looks to me like the fender needs twisted to be in line with the body. What do you think?

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

I tried adjusting the door in, and I moved the fender forward so I could pull the bottom out some. I think it looks a little better now.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Tonight I finally got the courage to install my head liner and new trim. I was nervous because I didn't want to break the trim, and I didn't want my head liner falling down. I used some heavy duty spray adhesive, sprayed the inner roof panel and the back side of the head liner, then let it set for about 10 minutes. I honestly think letting it sit was the key. I pushed the head liner to the cab and it stuck pretty much right now. The last time I tried it, the headliner barely stuck to the cab. But last time I only sprayed the head liner and allowed no curing time. I also installed my sun visors. Progress is progress right?

I also dug out my best cowl panel and set it on to see how things were lining up. So far so good, I think.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

It's looking good. The doors are nice, I probably had 8-10 hours into each of my doors with rust repair. Just wondering why you would bother putting fenders on yet. It's much easier to work on the engine with them off. You're a diesel wrencher, so wrench on that diesel.

Thanks. I put the fenders on now so I can see how far my lines are off and it is a ton easier to beat the dents out with it bolted to the truck. I'm going to be using a stud gun on most of the them and I've been there before with trying to hold the body panel and pull the dents. If you have an assistant it isn't such a big deal, but I don't most of the time. I will remove the fenders when body work is done and edge them, then remount them and paint the truck. Believe me I'd love to be wrenching on the engine because I want to get this truck running!

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Some more progress. I put the radiator support back on and bolted the fender back on so it would be solid while pulling the dents out. I'm using my Matco stud gun and body hammers to pull these dents. I try to use a hammer and dollie when I can get one in there. Here's some progress pics.

Here's one in the upper roof area.

Stud guns are great. I even used one to fill small holes in mine. Just weld the pin head in there and grind it smooth. Done.

They are a life saver on a lot of stuff for sure. I am no pro, but it sure makes it easier getting those dents out. I have used them to hold objects on a truck when you need another person when no one is around.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

I went to my local 67-72 parts guy to purchase a new RH fender to save me some body work time. However, when we pulled the only one he had in stock out of the box, it was not right. On the lower portion of the fender where the body line comes off the wheel arch and goes to the door , the line was crooked and the body line was off and it had some dings in it. He had some repairable OE fenders so I got the best one he had that I could see for sure was an OE fender. I have to fix some rust from the normal battery acid drip on the lower cup, but it's better than the RH fender I currently have. Dang, no cutting time on this one!

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

No real progress, but I did score some 99 up 8 lug chevy wheels off of the local CL. I'm going to take them and get them polished next week, then put them on. I also forgot, a few weeks back I met Eric, Toomuchstuff, in Mn and picked up some sweet Longhorn upper mouldings. Thanks again Eric!

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Well, today was the first time in a while the ole gal saw some day light in a while. I cleaned around it a little bit so I can try to find all my parts. I also did some shuffling of engines and in the process my new cherry picker broke 2 rear wheels. It is the biggest POS I have ever purchased. It's perfect for ricers, but not for what I do. Be prepared for progress pics daily hopefully. This truck is getting a p-pumped 24v, with compound turbos. I also am planning on an intercooler too. Just have to find one that won't break the bank.

Re: 1972 Longhorn 4x4 Diesel Project

Plans have changed again! I have decided to park my corvette from the diesel racing scene next year. I will put a mild engine and a A518 and just take it to shows. I'm now going to take the engine from the car and the built transmission and put it in the Longhorn. Then take the 24v and tranny I had for the Longhorn and put it in the 76. Kill 2 birds with one stone and save some pesos.
