Re: Rear end ID please.

Isn't that a 12 bolt with 4:11 gears?

37/9=4.11

Coil spring 12 bolt from a '66 2 wheel drive 1/2 ton with 4.11 gears. With an open diff.

Re: Rear end ID please.

And non-posi, correct? Also, is this a bolt in for the 67-72 trucks with trailing arms?

Re: Rear end ID please.

As Mike C says not a posi. You would see springs of some type in the center, some styles use springs, some use flat metal bent into an "S" type shape.

Re: Rear end ID please.

Thanks for the fast replies. You all confirmed what i was afraid of... 4:11 open diff. This was in a 66 swb forestry truck with a nice list of options... Including posi... I rolled the dice and lost this time. The spid is on the 66 message board.
Eric

Re: Rear end ID please.

Every time I have come across a truck with posi listed on the spid, the rear end is either gone, or the carrier has been pulled and the rest of the guts are laying on the ground. Strange that it was pulled and the diff. cover bolted back on...must have been removed before it got to the yard.

Re: Rear end ID please.

Scott, the posi must have been removed ALONG time ago. The last plate was 88 and when i looked under the truck i could not tell that anything had been touched. The spid had posi on it and being a forestry truck, some one wrote on the dash to use posi additive... I just hoped it was still there.

Re: Rear end ID please.

Dang Eric, I would have rolled the dice too. Did you try to rotate the tires before you pulled it? I always do that, unless the drums are frozen or driveline prevents it (that happens a lot)

No, the truck was sitting on the ground, it was 11:30, they close at noon. I barely had enough time to say cut it out for me. If i had more time i would have done that. While they were cutting it out, i was busy pulling 2 rims off another truck. (8.25x16.5 6 lug with the spring clips) plus my bonus was an NOS 66 pass rocker panel lying on the seat!

Re: Rear end ID please.

Sorry for my ignorance, but how do you guys know that its a 4:11 by the numbers on the ring gear? Is there a chart to refer to? Chevy manual?

Re: Rear end ID please.

see the 9-37 on the ring gear, take 37 and divide by 9 = 4.11

That is correct. I believe that is the number of teeth on the ring gear and on the pinion.
