Somebody tell me what this is please, other then a black box

Whats this for? Is it the same for big block and small block? It was under the dash of both an '86 and '88 suburban I parted.

Thanks in advance

I think it's the ...ECU? or whatever they called it for the electronically-controlled Quadrajets they had in 1985 and '86. My '86 C-10 had one that looked damn similar, but it was in yellow plastic rather than white and not on a big bracket like that. It was mounted on the passenger side where GM later mounted the TBI ECU's.

No this is up near the ash tray area I think it was or the break pedel. The ECU is still in the '88 for the TBI.

I never really dug into that part of the dash enough to find anything like that... got me stumped!

Could it be for trailer brakes? I know a lot of Suburbans had tow packages. I have parted out a number of pickups and I never remember seeing one of those.

My other guess would be something to do with the factory radio.

I believe that is the knock retard ECU for the distributor - should have a knock sensor in the block that runs to it. They used this to retard the timing automatically when it sensed any engine knock.

But on an '88 with TBI wouldnt that be in the ECU?

I think it's a trailer brake controller, a very basic one.

The knock retard ECU for 85-86 CCC systems is mounted in the same location as the F/I ECU for 88-91 trucks, behind the glove box in a white tray. So thats not it.

That's exactly what that is. it mounts to the right of the steering column support just above the brake pedal. Item # 11 & 12 in the diagram
