Just finished painting the Burb
When I bought this truck a couple of years ago, it had large cracks in the paint on the rear 1/4 panels where someone had fixed some damage with filler, but no metal work, so the filler cracked, which then cracked and flaked the paint. Also, there was rust in the floors, front and rear of the rear wheel wells, a split in the sheet metal on the rear corner (tail light area), and rust around the top of the windshield frame ("luckily" the windshield was cracked and needed to be replaced, otherwise I would never had seen the rust. I caught it just in time).
Anyways, after several patch panels welded in and lots of filling, sanding, filling, sanding, priming, sanding, priming, sanding....it is done. I also added white to the "C" pillar and top of hatch, which was painted all red before. Well, the results are "OK" at best. Probably as good as can be expected when painting in the driveway under a tarp. Certainly better than the cracked paint and peeling clearcoat that was there before...... Here are some pics: Before the paint, you can see all the clear on the hood flaking: During the bodywork phase: After the primer: ....And after the paint: Tim

Re: Just finished painting the Burb
Very nice work. I like it when people just go for it. I think too often we get wrapped up in not having the ideal work space, the ultimate tools, etc. I put a new engine in my burb this summer in what used to be a tobacco greenhouse, and last summer I spent a few days working under my truck on an old piece of plywood in our gravel driveway. Spend more time keeping these trucks on the road and less worrying about the "ideal" conditions to come along. It will never happen.
Your paint job looks great to me. I just hope I can do a job that nice in my greenhouse. |

Very cool 'burb!
Keep us updated as this is a very cool project. Also noticed you have added a fuel door, is that difficult to do?

Re: Just finished painting the Burb
Sorry, I did not add it. It was on the truck when I bought it....I just assumed that it was factory, but I have not seen another, so maybe not. It just bolts to what appear to be factory holes in the filler opening.....I can take some close up photos if you like?
I am away from home for the weekend, so I can't do it until Sunday. Before I left, I got everything back on, except for the windshield and rear hatch (need to buy some new hatch hinge seals first). I also have to but off the front tow hitch receiver so that I can mount the new bumper (old one had a cut out for the hitch). The grill and moldings are all on. I figure one more afternoon of work and she will ready for action...then I can pull her into the sun and get a real idea of how good, or bad, the paint job is.....

Re: Just finished painting the Burb
Looks great. Any idear how much money you have invested in the paint job? The last car I painted was my dads 71 lemans and that was 12 years ago. I hear paint (much like everything else has gone up.) -Brian

Re: Just finished painting the Burb
I have all the receipts for the paint and supplies, which I can tally up, but off the cuff, I think for the paint (no clear, I used single stage), primer, filler, sand paper and cleaning solvents and several rolls of masking tape, I think I sent somewhere in the 400-500 range. Obviously that takes into account that I already own DA sander, block sanders and spray guns..

Re: Just finished painting the Burb
Posted this in the wrong post (fiberglass hatch), here is where it should have gone!
Some updated pictures. I got the rest of the front end back together and the hatch on. Just need to buy a couple of clips for the hatch molding and the driver door molding, install the new windshield and hatch glass, and the cowl, and should be done.

Re: Just finished painting the Burb
I doubt it. The truck used to be orange/white, then the PO painted it. I tried to match as much as possible, but it came out a little lighter and slightly more metallic.

Re: Just finished painting the Burb
Final pics. All put together except for the door panels inside.....
Have not done any color sanding or buffing, it needs it, but I don't think that I will go that far.....

245/70 17 BFG Rugged Trail. Got a smoking deal from a guy on CL that took them off his Dodge Ram after only 1700miles from new (he replaced rims/tires) for $100 for all 4!
