Gas tanks?
When I had the Impala here, I was told that the Impala gas tank would work where the spare tire goes underneath the bed. I didn't take the Impala tank off due to thinking it wouldn't work, besides it was an old tank. But now I wish I had taken it down to see if it would fit~ and I still can go back out and get it if I want.
A fellow member on Stangfix said that it would and just have to have the springloaded license plate to access the filler neck, just like on the Impala, however the ohms may be different from it and the gas gauge; This sounds intriguing to me. I will be taking out my gas tank from behind the seat. Any experience with this idea? dne' http://www.ss396.com/mm5/merchant.mv..._Code=XTR-64AK |

Re: Gas tanks?
Before I tore it apart mine had the stock tank behind the seat and a second where the spare tire was. It came out of a late 60's Chevelle or Impala. I just fabricated some straps parallel with the frame. The filler worked perfect behind a flop down license plate frame from the same car. I ran an electric twin tank switch. In 15 years of off road 4wd drive use it never got bashed. Sorry no pictures, my tear down is being held hostage on an old cam corder tape.

Re: Gas tanks?
So, that would be considered an OK gas tank to install! I like the idea of having a hidden filler neck with a flip down license! Thanks Orrie!

Re: Gas tanks?
Well, tomorrow, I'm going to where the Impala is! lol I just spoke to Sylvester and he said no problem, he'll get the car up in the air with his forklift and we'll get it down and the license plate spring! He's so cool! Shame on me for not taking it down to begin with! darn!
So, when I get it here, I can put it up and see how well it fits and go from there. is this something I would need if the gas tank above fits: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevy...mZ140457235798 Last edited by Denee007; 08-29-2011 at 11:20 AM. Reason: added info |

Re: Gas tanks?
I just used 1/8" x 1.5" wide strap and bent it to fit the tank profile. The ends were bolted to the rear frame and shock crossmembers. I will go up in the garage attic storage and see if I still have one I can photo, I may have used them for something else. I think you willfind you will need to heavily modify the expensive one you are looking at. Don't over think it, you will be surprised how well it fits. Don't forget a cushion between the tank and support straps and any places on the top that hit the frame. I used heavy cargo strap material I had laying around. Also think about the sending unit ohm rating, the Impala tank will be different that the stock unit if that is how your gauge is set up. You can get after market units to match the gauge if you are using the stock gauges.

Re: Gas tanks?
OMG Thilde!, I just read through that entire thread! That man is incredible! I was hoping he was going to exit his gas tank out via the license plate, but I get the jist how how the gas tank mounts! I can do that! Plus there were a bunch of other ideas I saw~ like the 5/16" fuel line to hide the wires on his engine~ I do that too! Thanks!! and everyone!
dne' If it looks like I can't use the flip down license plate, I'll do what he did, but I'm going to work on it!; ) Quote:

Re: Gas tanks?
Kustombrad is my hero, I have stolen many ideas from him. He is a cheap skate like me too. The photo reminded me that when I used the aux tank and was going out in the boonies I would use it first. Climbing steep grades it would leak out the vented cap. In town it was never a problem.

Re: Gas tanks?
Problem with the rear filler style tanks is the tank hangs down really low and is visible from the back and the rear of the truck.
Especially if you run a rear roll pan instead of the rear bumper. |

Re: Gas tanks?
FWIW here is a photo of the straps I used with my late 60's Chevelle tank I said I would post. Bent to fit the tank profile and bolted to shock and rear cross braces. I used heavy 1/8" webbing between the brace and tank.

Re: Gas tanks?
Only lay down drunks and small children will get that view. I guess you could cover it, I used a receiver hitch to disquise mine.
