Factory Bedside Toolbox

I came across this last week at the junkyard. I have never seen one on a chevy newer than '72, but I took a picture since I thought it was really neat. I assume its a rare option as it's the first I've seen. It really made me wish I had the space because I woulda bought the whole bed

Re: Factory Bedside Toolbox

I would go get that whole bed. Super rare, I`m sure someone would want it. I`ve never seen one, as they have all rotted out around here. I could slap that whole bed on my truck.

Re: Factory Bedside Toolbox

It had pretty decent rust over the wheel wells and on the rear quarters, typical, but fixable. I really wish I had a place to put it, and a truck to put it on.

Re: Factory Bedside Toolbox

Wow! I have never seen one on a production truck. I did see they were listed in the early pre production 73 dealer truck ordering book. And that is on the drivers side for 1973 where as they were on the passenger side on the older bodystyle. I would get that box side and tool box parts as that is an option NO one will have. Mark

Agreed, I'd buy the bed in a heart beat. That's a really rare one.

Re: Factory Bedside Toolbox

You gotta save that piece of square body history, even just to save it for future generations before it gets damaged or is crushed and resell it. I also would grab the factory option list for that truck on the LH fender wheelhouse under the hood showing that tool box option. Those were a longbox only option but think what you would have if you had a factory wood floor and a tool box option. Can you say one of a kind RARE factory options.

Re: Factory Bedside Toolbox

BigRed, Would you share with me the junkyard that has it? I found another one of these several years ago and cut out the bedside and got the fiberglass insert and the door. I got most of the mounting hardware. But I need to get some measurements of where the bolts go in the floor of the bed. Thanks

Re: Factory Bedside Toolbox

Seriously, go cut it out of the bed and take the surrounding trim also. It can always be welded into a good bed and it wont take up much space.

I have seen pictures of trucks with them but never one in person. I figure most people probably just went with over the rail tool boxes instead.

Re: Factory Bedside Toolbox

Funny if you notice in the ad above the door is fully below the lower trim. All the ones on the truck pics above have special trim that is cut for the door.

I tried to buy a 73 gmc this weekend that has a toolbox like this. It is a sierra grande half ton with a 454. He would not sell it though. The only one I have ever seen in person.

Did the one you looked at have the trim "ON" the door, or "ABOVE" ?

. . . and you didn't take a picture of it, did you !!!

Re: Factory Bedside Toolbox

I had one in my 73 but as posted above the door rusted out quickly with road salt in the rust belt. I really don't think it was very practical - it really does not hold much, but would be good for a bottle jack and some tools, bungees, etc.
I am thinking of making some below the rail full length side boxes to assist with dumping the bed in the dump box conversion I have - that would be ideal in my opinion.

They DO get rusty - but they CAN be fixed, here's the one on my 70 - before and after it's restoration:

Re: Factory Bedside Toolbox

Yeah Steve I did not take a pic. I was in a hurry and it was raining. I am going to eventually get the truck I think. When I look at it again I will take some pics and post them. I think that the door had the trim on it like all of the truck pics above.

Re: Factory Bedside Toolbox

How many 73-75 trucks came with a fuel tank behind the seat like the first picture in post 11?

I'd like to add a toolbox to my truck, but I don't want to give up a fuel tank for it. That's when I noticed the location of the fuel tank in the picture.

That is a rare option on these. I found one once in a junkyard and took some pictures and planned to come back and remove it, when I got back the bed was crushed...

Cut it out.
