Hood Safety Catch/Lever (1950)
I finally picked up a hood last night for my '50. Shouldn't there be a safety catch next to the latch pin? I've looked all over a couple of the vendor sites but I can't find a listing for a "safety catch".

Re: Hood Safety Catch/Lever (1950)
Maybe someone could post some good clear pictures of the stock setup? Maybe some measurements as well? With all the cars and trucks using a safety catch we should be able to figure one out that's close to stock.

Re: Hood Safety Catch/Lever (1950)
It is a stamped steel hook with a spring and a rivet. They are famous for broken springs around here. I've got 2-3 hoods like that. I can't believe they'd be that hard to find. I have a rotted out hood that I'll check to see if it is any good so I can re-spring mine! Half the battle with them is when the springs go bad in them, they won't 'center' themselves and you end up smacking them on the latch plate.

Re: Hood Safety Catch/Lever (1950)
Just took mine out to paint it and yes it has a broken spring.
I think a junkyard tour is inevitable to look for suitable donors. If I find anything i'll let you know. I also managed to break the spot welds trying to unseize the pin adjustment..... |

Re: Hood Safety Catch/Lever (1950)
I'd really like a measurement from red dot to red dot. A bazillion cars used this type of safety latch I'm sure a suitable donor could be found or I'll make one.

Re: Hood Safety Catch/Lever (1950)
That is the original hood off of my 50 3100. The latch worked good when I took it off of the truck 7 years ago because the hood got trashed when a girl on a cell phone ran a stop sign in front of me. The latch is good the brace is bent. What do I need to check for you. I have no need for it so I could sell it. I kept the hood because I hate to throw stuff away.

Re: Hood Safety Catch/Lever (1950)
Anyone consider one of these from Autoloc?
Looks like it has a mount for a pull cable too! They cost $35. http://www.autoloc.com/catalog/Bear-...Latch-Assembly Last edited by Atomsplitter; 09-21-2011 at 02:58 PM. |

Re: Hood Safety Catch/Lever (1950)
Let me know who else needs one and I will look around. I know of a junk yard that has probably 8 or so 1.5 tons if they are the same latch.

I actually looked long and hard at that one myself before deciding to keep the original setup.

Re: Hood Safety Catch/Lever (1950)
If I can find mine I'll sell it. I used my S10 latch for mine and cut the old unit off.

Re: Hood Safety Catch/Lever (1950)
I have been asked to supply details about my aftermarket (Not stock) hood latch. I bought mine from a company called Don's Street Rods which is no longer in business.
The one that is close to mine (pictured) is from Watsons Streetworks. The main difference with mine is mine has a metal cage (structure) around the plastic housing providing more strength. This latch just requires one hole for the striker as well as (2) small mounting holes. There is no safety cable or latch. And I didn't pay $110.00 for mine. That seems high. It seems to do the trick for my set up. Thanks

Re: Hood Safety Catch/Lever (1950)
For anyone intersted, I saw this at Hot Augusts Nights in Reno last month. Kind of an ingeniously simple and cheap lock for your hood. I'm planning on doing this. I will use one on either side but one alone would PROBABLY work ok. Available at near any hardware store for $5.
I'd put a small polished stainless plate over the hole to eliminate chipping the paint: |
