freshened up the steelies

I had been running late model aluminum wheels and then decided to get back to the 70's! Painted the caps and wheels. The tires seem WAY too skinny, but overall it looks good!

those are 8 luggers he has, same as you. you can run any cap that is 12" in diameter. the 1/2 ton caps are smaller and measure 10.5" in diameter

Re: freshened up the steelies

Thanks for the replies guys! It was pretty easy bringing them back to life...

They are just driver quality, so I didn't get wild with minute detail...from 5 feet away they look great and I won't be distressed if I mar them up. The caps were $20 at the salvage yard and the spray paint and tape cost about $20 as well so I am into it for under $50...

supplies:

Mother's Metal Polish
Duplicolor Flat Black Engine Enamel
Duplicolor Old Ford Blue Gloss Engine Enamel
Rustoleum Gloss White
1/8" 3M yellow masking tape
2" yellow masking tape
Angle Grinder and 2" wire brush cup

They turned out pretty darn good. and please disregard the tires...they are cruddy old 235/55R16's that need replacing...BTW, is that close to the factory tire size?

Re: freshened up the steelies

You truck looks great! 235/75s would be the closest to 7.50-16s that came on these. They are taller and would look awesome.

If you want to go just a little wider with the stock height, there's also 265/75/16s
It's a no-brainer, your truck looks great with the steelies. Great decision.

Re: freshened up the steelies

original wheels on your truck look better to me . Just something about the clean look of the period back when you could purchase that truck for under $5,000.00 !!!!!! As my dad did. great times! cheers, Pat

Wow, looks great! Good job on the painting too. I wish my truck looked half has good as yours. Where did you get the wheels and what are they off of? I have the caps, but no wheels (I gave away the original 16" split rims). I plan on doing he same thing, except I will paint my wheels the original '69 silver.

Thanks for the comments! They are the wheels that came on the truck when I bought it. Two are original 16x8 GM. the other two are Firestone Accuride 16x8...must be from a ford, but you can't tell the difference.

I think both sets of wheels look good on your truck. I would have to say though I like the look with the steelies. Nice job!

Re: freshened up the steelies

I like chunky tires. For that look I'd go with 285/75s on the rear. Not a stock look, more like the look of what a guy would have done back then, though.
