Made a dumb mistake today

I had been looking for another rear end for my truck to convert it from 6 to 5 lug. I already have some rims that I want to use so I started measuring how I wanted the wheels and tires to sit in the fenderwells. I found a guy selling a late model z28 rear end with posi and disc brakes that just happened to be the width I was looking for. I got the rear end home and started to stick my rims on it and they dont fit. I didnt think to check the bolt pattern. I just assumed that chevy 5 lug were all the same. My rims are 5x4.75 and these are 5x4.5. UGH!!!

Re: Made a dumb mistake today

actually your wheels should be 5x5 and the rear end should be 5x4.75
but either way, adapters or getting the axles and rotors redrilled to the pattern you need will work

Re: Made a dumb mistake today

The wheels are 5x4.75 and the new rear end is 5x4.5. I cant do adapters because they will widen the rear end too much. I think I am going to just have the axles redrilled.

All older Chevy trucks are 5x5. Most GM cars have the 5x4.75, except I know the 91 and newer Caprices and Impalas are 5x5 also.

I agree with the others, truck 5 lug wheels are 5x5, Z28 rear ends are 5x4.75.

Re: Made a dumb mistake today

That makes sense. Either way I still have to redrill the axles or change out the axles.

To be safe take a wheel with you when you take the axles to be drilled and let them measure it...

Re: Made a dumb mistake today

Not to mention that z28 rear end is a 7.5" 10 bolt. These are very week rears and I would not trucst one in a truck, if you plan to do more than just cruise.

Actually Caprices etc. bounced around on size from '71 up, some years had both sizes. I have had a '72 Grandville, '77 Bonneville, and '96 Caprice with the 5x5 and I had an '86 and an '88 Caprice with the 5x4.75. In the words of Shawn Spencer from the TV show Psych "I've seen it both ways".

I just ordered a set of wheel adapters for my neighbor yesterday. Chevy S10 with 5x4.75 to 5x5

just make sure you get the reach nuts to go with it and you wont have a problem. "IF" you have enough room at the fender...you might have to roll the fenders

Re: Made a dumb mistake today

I've been measuring the 5 lugs wrong! I always take a rim though. I've screwed up enough times with centers being too small or the pattern being smaller or bigger that I always take a rim.
