Well, my rear tires on the 68 are toasted, so I decided I was going to pull them off tonight, put the truck on jackstands, and get new ones put on tomorrow....

Since my hydraulic jack is out of commission, I decided to use a standard bumper jack (I think it may have come out of my 77 monte carlo). As most of you know, 67-72's came with a bottle jack from the factory, but mine is long gone. So I placed the bumper jack under the rear bumper in the nice little cutout notch that's already there. Lo and behold, it worked...or so I thought.

I got the RR tire almost off the ground, and the truck shifted....I jumped back, and the lovely PMO (previous moron owner) homemade bumper bracket bent!

So here's what my bumper looks like... I guess it's just another reason for me to get the correct brackets now

D'oh!

Yes, that's one moral, LOL. Another would be not to cheap out and "fabricate" brackets out of fomoco

Yeah Bill, I've wised up a little. Back in the day I can remember working on my 77 monte's exhaust with just a bumper jack holding it up....I'm lucky that heavy thing didn't fall on me....I know a few guys who have been trapped under cars and such, it can really mess you up badly, that's why you should always have a good set of jackstands

Gee by looking at the bumper and factory brackets I wouldn't jack it up by the bumper and IMO expect NOT to bend something. I figure it's lucky you got off with that little of damage.

......ok, everybody calls me a little "goofy":p Those d@mn bumper jacks are freakin scarey! I have seen them fly out from under the bumper, & d@mn near take a guys elbow off(freakin YIKES!) crazyL

your getting jacked around man, thats one thing I definatly don't trust is jacks, when I use them I'm always thinking there going to let go at any time, I put jack stands under before I take the tire off, I'd tell you a story about a friend who got pinned under his car but the story is too gruesome, I always think of him when I use a jack, be careful out there

The bumper looks fine man...it's the rest of the truck that is crooked!
I have also seen these things shoot out from under the bumper, and I had it happen on a huge Toronado...I was 12 and it scared the poop out of me.

A friend in high school was working on his car late one night using a hydralic jack. His grandmother came out to check on him by calling his name when he didn't answer she got pissed, cussed at him and went back inside. The next morning when she went to get in her car to go to work, she found him pinned under the car. She called 911, I saw the ambulance fly by on my way to school. Apparantly he had been pinned for about 12 hours. He died later that day because the weight of the car had deprived some of his major organs of blood for too long. I never, never work on a car using only a jack. In fact I hate even reaching under one to put the jack stands in place. To be honest, a car that is on jack stands kinda makes me nervous as well. After I put a car on jack stands I rock it around, shake it, bounce in it. I try to knock it off to see if its stable.

Only time I've seen this with my own two eyes, the guy was big enough that when it landed on him, he laughed, and shoved the car off of himself!
