Ignition Problems
When i turn the ignition switch off in my truck, the engine doesnt want to stop firing. the engine dies for a second, then immedialtey comes back to live. it chugs and coughs for about 10-15 seconds, then finally dies. it almost sounds like the engine is being turned with the starter. any ideas? i am stumped. thanx

i think that is called dieseling (spl???) it happens to me in the winter time in my truck.

try retarding the timing a little.maybe better gas to if its a higher compression engine.

if its dieseling its timing too far advanced retard it a little if its the truck running on it may be the ignition swiitch on the column base

A high idle speed, for what ever reason (idle adjustment, faulty choke assembly/adjustment, linkage problems) will also induce that condition.

One more trick: this phenomenon became common in the mid-70's when lead was taken away from gasoline and engines were made to run hotter, supposedly to reduce emissions, etc.
So, whenever an engine would diesel on shut-down, I had to do one of two things....(1) if it was an automatic, I'd put it back into Drive, then turn the key off....or (2) if it was a standard, I'd just let the clutch out as I turned off the ignition. My son's '69 had an engine that was a little more high-performance than mine. He had to run Premium in it, or it would diesel. Just my suggestion. The others have given you some things to check. But, for those times when you don't have tools or whatever, try my suggestions.
