Make sure before you lay silicone on anything that's its chemically clean.....use a strong sovlent that leaves no residue such as lacquer thinner, acetone or brake cleaner.

25+ tips ....all for free, your mechanic won't do that for you

Get rid of the filter, and put a stock one back in the carb.

I know I am a little late, but I always change the oil before I crank it. No matter how careful you are, you always have a little antifreeze that gets in the valley.

Yeah, thanks again. It took a ton of work just to get it clean. The oil and grime had been caked on there for so long, I actually had to chip away at it. It was a learning experience for sure, but totally worth it if you want to change the look of your engine bay. Hardly any money went into it; all the original parts.
