Edelbrock carburetor - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I bought a new Edelbrock performer series carburetor for my 86 truck. The manual says it is not for "computer controlled applications'. My old quadrajet had 2 wires connected to it. Are these wires for a computer? Do I have to have computer control?

The Q-Jets use electric chokes. That is what the wires are for. I assume you bought a manual choke carb. If so, you will need to get a manual choke cable to do the same job as the electric choke.

I would not recommend getting a cable that has a metal outer sheath. I had one temporarily until it contacted an exposed junction box and grounded out on the temp gauge wire lead. The above setup is cheaper too.

I think that year has a computer controlled Q-jet. Is it a 2 wire plug on the pass front top of the carb?

Sorry for the confusion, I meant in addition to the electric choke. Yes the quadrajet does have the 2 wire plug on the front of the carb and wires for the electric choke. How will lack of computer control affect my new carb?

Hi lanconcj,

If I remember correctly, the computer controlled Q-Jets have both a 3-wire plug (near the driver side) for the throttle position sensor and a 2-wire plug on top for the mixture control solenoid.

Some of these trucks also used a Q-Jet with a dual capacity accelerator pump. They have a 2-wire plug on top that's connected to a thermostatic control switch. But no computer.

If your truck has the carb with the dual capacity pump, you won't have to do anything special to run the Edelbrock.

If your truck has the computer controlled carb, I think you'll also have to swap out the distributor. That's because the computer also controls the ignition advance. You can tell by looking at the distributor. A computer controlled one won't have a vacuum advance or mechanical advance mechanism.
