Hi Chad ! Nice build so far!!!
In response to your PM, Here are some pictures of my hydro boost set up.
I wish we could attach pictures in a PM, so I will have to just attach them here in your thread.


The linkage- I made an adjustable push rod using 3/8" rod couplings and 3/8" threaded rod. I cut off the shaft from the hydro boost and left just a short stub. Drilled out one side of a 3/8" rod coupling to the same diameter of the shaft, pressed it together and spot welded in place. I had converted the existing eye that fit on my 64's brake lever previously in the same way.
Then use the all-thread to fit between the two rod couplings and use 3/8"nuts and lock washers as jam nuts when the adjustment is perfect.
It would be better if one side was left handed thread so you could adjust like a turn buckle, but this works OK. The hydro boost side spins so I just left a little free-play and movement of the pedal arm before engagement and tightened the jam nuts.


The hoses- I grabbed the hoses from the 94 Astro van as they are metric and use O-rings. Cut off the hose right next to the old pressed on connection.
NAPA has some 3/8" compression fittings that they pressed on new 3000 PSI hoses. I had one side of each hose made, took them home and test fit and marked each hose for exact length, took them back to NAPA and them them cut to the mark and the other end pressed on. The compression fitting are rotatable before you tighten them as the hose is very stiff. I cut the hose from the old flared fittings and reused the flared ends on the power steering pump and gearbox side . I used bulk transmission hose to make up the return lines and Tee'd back in to the pump return port.


The mount -- I had already purchased the mount from CaptainFab and had installed power brakes , but was not pleased with the vacuum booster I installed .
I may have had a bad booster but I also have a cam in my inline 6 and the heads are shaved so the 15" of vacuum at idle was not enough to have the braking results I was after,
I mounted the 94 Astro van hydro boost and master on the CaptainFab bracket and reconnected the brake lines.
Remember that on the master cylinder that the larger rear plastic tank connects to the front discs and the front smaller tank connects to the rear drums.
The proportioning valve is off a 71 C-10 and a modified S-10 bracket.

It stops AMAZING now!!! Maybe a little touchy, but it will not slide the tires on dry roads. It just stops fast and will set you into the set belts!!
Oh yeah--- get some new shoulder harness belts, these are too much brakes for the old style lap belts!!

thanks bruce, for the nice comments, and for the pictures! the hydro boost i got had two push rods with it 1) long, and 1) short, both threaded and a piece that looks like the piece you have at the pedal! i hope i can just cut the all thread i have, put two lock washers and nuts on it, and be good to go!

On a side note, once i got the motor in there i started thinking (man, i want love to hear it run again)! i thought of grabbing my electric fuel pump, my headers and some wires, hooking the radiator up, get a spare battery, and start it, but i didnt! i feel alot better knowing that i am just that close, beside bodywork, paint, interior, wiring harness, i pretty much am that close! as long as everything go's well this next year i'm right on track with getting it done!

Hey Chad, your truck is coming along good. I like the way it sits in the above pic. I ordered my 4 inch drop springs for the rear yesturday. I am hoping It will be low enough for what I want and I dont have to C-notch the frame. I need to get the cab back on the frame and some sheetmetal so I can decide what I need to do with the front. thanks allaboutchevelles, for the comments! my truck is lowered with 3in. springs and 2in. blocks in the back! but i think the springs i ordered are jeep springs and are too soft! the guy told me they were for our trucks and for 3" drop, but me and two friends (about 600-700lbs.) got in the back and it got real low! the frame wasn't touchin the rearend, but i'm going to change to having air bags atleast for the rear hooked up to schrader valves, so that way i can put what i want and adjust it too!

truck is looking great,really like what you have done under the hood, i am thinking about the hydro boost set up on mine as well. my cam is so big it dosent make nowhere enough vacuum, but it sure does sound good. cant have your cake and eat it too, or so they say

thanks flip for the comments, pretty soon i wont be doing much to the truck because of the weather! i won't be doing the bumpers this weekend like i wanted to, it's gonna rain for the next 4-5 days! but i did get all 10 carriage bolt heads ground down to about 1/8" in. so i can weld them on when it's not raining!

Looks like she's still coming along nicely. I've always wanted to run a hydro-boost set up for my brakes, but so far have been skunked on them at the junkyards. I'll keep looking and waiting, the cost of new (or even what people want for their old ones) just is too rich for my blood. hey thanks fryer, for the comments! i know what you mean about staying motivated, not to many people comment on anything i do (good or bad), the hydro boost i bought new off ebay! the guy didnt spell things right, so there was no bids on it! i got it for just under $100, the master cylinder is worth almost that so i think it was a good deal! the headers i got are dynomax blackjack headers for a chevelle, i hope they work! a friend gave them to me when he got his ceramic coated headers! have you been doing anything to tanya? or have you just been doing your car club stuff?

No worries my friend, I like to watch all the guys building on budgets like mine. Not hating on the pros and high dollar trucks, they just don't do much for motivation for a guy with no money (but they sure are nice to look at). Your Chevelle headers should work just fine actually, if I were to swap to an auto tranny that was what I was planning to use. They should even give you a little better ground clearance over the truck headers. Unfortunately Tanya has not seen much love recently, some club stuff, and some just life. Plus I am working a spot this quarter that has me filling in for people who are on leave of one kind or another so my days off change quite a bit. Hopefully here I can get back to work on her, parts are piling up and she needs some big adjustments to make a better daily driver. Keep it up bud!

I guess I am lucky to have a pick and pull yard not very far from home. I spent maybe 50 bucks on the hydro ,master and the old hoses. probably spent only 140-150 bucks or less on the whole hydro change-over including a new filter and fluid.
I was looking at 7 different astro vans, a couple diesel half tons a diesel 'burb and a C-30 crew cab all with boosters.
I love wrecking yards but I get sad when I find something that somebody wrecked or parted out that could have been rebuilt and saved!!

fryer, (they just don't do much for motivation for a guy with no money), i know what you mean! the guys on a budget get you thinking (hey i can do that this weekend)! about the headers i was thinking the samething about clearance! i'm thinking of taking them over there tomorrow and double check to see how everything will need to be routed since theres only 20% chance of rain this weekend, it didnt rain yesterday or today like they said it would!
bruce, thats funny since i moved back in march, theres a salvage yard in walking distance for my place! i've only gone there once since then and they don't let you take tools or anything! they will go with you and pull the part for you, which to me sucks cause its like they kind of want you to hurry! they had a few other ones around here but i haven't gone to any of them! in tulsa where my wifes family lives theres a few that you pay to get in and i love those kind, you can spend all day in them! but not to many of them have older cars and trucks in them anymore!! there is this one that i went to years ago with my uncle it's within 10-15 miles from here but i can't remember the name or what roads it's on, i'll have to talk to him today! theres nothin but old cars and trucks there, just hope there all still there! i remember that they had 2 63' impalas they only wanted $1000 for both but what one was missing the other had, i didnt have the money or the place to put two cars!

rich thanks for the comments, i'm going slow compared to some, lol! after winter i'll be doing the interior stuff, weatherstripping, wiring, paint the motor, install the gas tank and i think i'm going to start driving it! i can do the bodywork as i'm driving it, i'll paint it later, and if i do that i'll still be on schdule with getting it road ready in the next year! thanks guys for all the comments, it gives me motivation to work on something everyday!!

well i had no luck today, the chevelle headers i have (dynamax blackjack 85001) will not work with the cpp tubular perches, i tried! so i got to get the right headers! anyone need some headers?! i tried to get my grille support panel bolted on today to, but since my trucks on an 70' frame and i eye-balled mounting the front crossmember for the radiator! i got to move it in 1 1/2", to get the grille panel to bolt up and to mount the radiator mounts to the top of that crossmember! i just got more work but today was just trail and error anyways!!

Nice Job on the build. I am in the middle of a 65 build. Like you I am Trying to do it without breaking the bank. I have been Hitting a lot of u pull yards for OEM parts. I like your brake boost set up. I pulled a vacuum boost master from an early 90's 1500.($20) Have not installed it yet but now I am thinking will the med size cam in my 350 be too radical fro proper brake boost? I guess I will find out when I install. Any draw backs to the Hydro boost set up? I have seen a few in the yards around here. Cheap.$25-30 (Side note... on your upper ball joints where you drilled out your factory rivids...turn your bold over so they are facing down. this will give you more clearance. and its safer)

thanks summerj for the comments, about the ball joints i was told to leave them facing up so that the threads dont cut the rubber up then turning! the only draw back i can think of it that fact that you have to hook it up to the power steering box and gearbox! that and the price of hoses for them!

i've been looking at the hedman 69640 headers cause they are short for ground clearance, and i was looking at the hedman 69090 cause i like full length headers! i'm kind of leaning for the 69640 cause i hear the 69090 hang down below the frame rails! if anyone knows about this let me know, but i think i'll still go with the 69640!

thanks captain, wonder how much lower do they hang? i'm going to be putting bags on the back with the schrader valves just to help out with loads and anything else! so the truck dont look slammed it the back with stuff in it! i'll be getting them by the end of the week, then i'm going to mod. the top brackets or just finish making the ones i started on! i'll show you guys what they look like when i get done with them but they will wait til after winter before i put them on!

chad, i just looked for some pics of my truck showing how far the headers hang below the truck but i couldnt find any, i have the long tube hedmans on mine but i dont think the are to low. the one thing i dont like abot them is the htc coating with five year warrenty that were starting to show rust after a year. i contacted hedman and they said i needed to take some steel wool and clean them up, doesnt make sense to me, i mean thats why i went with a coated header to start with, no maintenance. i have found a place close to me that will ceramic coat them for 185.00 so thats probably what i will do.

Here are a couple pics of the 69090 headers on my son's '63 K10 I was telling you about. On a C10 they will be slightly lower, below the bottom of the frame, as the K series frames are taller under the cab area.

ok thanks john for the pictures! i guess i'm going to go with the 69640, and tuck the exhaust up out of the way, then figure out getting it to come out infront of the rear tires!! i figure with the difference between the k10 and the c10 the collector will be showing under the frame, and with a 4.5" drop in front it would drag if it bottoms out, and bend them up!!

well i will be slacking on the truck for awhile, will try to update when i can, i started a new job last night! so, i'll be working nights 6 days a week for who knows how long, i'm happy to get more hours plus the pay so thats good! i'm still going to try to finish the rear bag plates and still do the bumpers before winter, i hope!! i wont be doing anything this sunday its my daugthers b-day so i wont be working on the truck this weekend!! will let you know how things go!!
