How rare is a 72 Custom Camper/20 Highlander 4X4 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I know where there is a 1972 CustomCamper/20 with the Highlander C options ( If I remember correctly ) and its a 4X4. It is two tone White/Medium Olive. It is a 350 with a TH 350 tranny. It has white interior with the avocado inserts. It has typical Iowa rust. He may be ready to sell, but hasn't advertised it. I will try to gets pics soon but they would be nothing to look at because it is the cab on the chassis. The front clip is next to one barn and the box is at another. Also, I'm afraid the wife would kill me after just getting the trucks scaled back to just one.

I would say that it's pretty rare.

I bet that rig was quite a sight to see when brand new!

Back in 1972 it wasnt recommended to haul your camper on a 4wd vehicle so you dont see too many custom camper 4x4 that were ordered that way. Highlander option is icing on the cake!

I had one and until now it's the only one I ever knew of. I've been into these trucks since they were new and been around the country a good bit. Definitely a rare truck. My friend bought mine and it's getting a top-notch restoration.
Medium Blue & White and along with the Highlander/Custom Camper goodies: 4spd...tach...am/fm...aux tank...tool & stowage compartment...wood floor...No-Spin...tow hooks...manual throttle...aux battery...and accessories like vent shades...bumper guards...engine heater
I never would have sold that truck if I didn't have to. Same goes for my Cheyenne Super Custom Camper K/20 with many good options. To me,highly optioned K/20s have always been the top of the food chain along with highly optioned short bed big blocks. Higher in my case.

Agree with the well optioned K20's being the top of the food chain. Looks like about 20,000 K20's in total were made in 72. Figure highlanders would be a small portion of that since many K20's were bought to work and not be someone's weekend toy that was babied. Also since they were bought to work, many were used up and scrapped. This makes a recipe for rarity. Even finding any good original K20 is quite a feat, took me over a year in this part of the country and mine is just a custom with a locked up engine

I'd put high option SWB K/10s up top,too. And when I say K/20,that surely includes Suburbans & Panels. Imagine a loaded K/20 Panel. If ever there was one built I'd sure love to see a picture of that!

i would love to see some pics as well. This site has turned me into a Highlander FANATIC, especially the green/avocado ones. So much that i bought a SWB K10 to build into a Green/White with avocado highlander package.

Well here are some horrible pics. By the time I got there tonight it was already dark, out in gods country with only flashlights. It isn't as complete as before. The tilt is gone as well as some a/c parts. The engine and tranny are also gone. I talked to him a bit about it but he wants me to come back during the day to really look it over. All I got for pics are the Spid and the Custom Camper emblem on the door. I want to know who orders a custom camper package and also orders below eyeline mirrors.

I believe its for a wood floor bed but not 100% sure.

Model number denotes its a 2 wheel drive, if its a 4x4 then its had a body swap.

Well,first of all,that's part of the Highlander package. But,they are good mirrors and unless you have a big slide-in camper that's wide,they are excellent rear view mirrors. Many got the Custom Camper package to haul just a Cap/Canopy/Topper type camper and/or tow a travel trailer. Two of my most recent Custom Camper 4wds were set up with 5th wheels. My old Cheyenne Super Custom Camper came with standard mirrors...what people call sport mirrors these days. I always called them car mirrors. Mirrors weren't part of the Custom Camper option.

Didn't even look at the model #. It should say "CK" since its a 72. It would still be cool, but I will probably pass now.
