Re: think the engine is a gonnar

In my experience lost compression is a gradual failure and not a sudden one, although I'm not saying it couldn't happen.

Check your fuel pump. If it's the mechanical one driven off of a lobe on the front of the crank I bet this is your problem, sight unseen...

drop the fuel line from the pump to the carb, clean it out

Good chance the charcoal canister has come apart and is getting charcoal in the carb. It will cause the float to stick as well as stop the jets completely up were it wont run.

Re: think the engine is a gonnar

I had a pickup with a plugged heater core took it in to a shop they "back flushed" it and never had a problem again was $750 to replace it and $65 to back wash it a gamble that paid off

Re: think the engine is a gonnar

you can take the hoses off the heater core from under the hood get a peace of pipe put the two hoses together so you by pass the heater core to drive the truck just wont have any heat but it will get you by till you can fit it properly

Re: think the engine is a gonnar

What Stroker said, did this many times to the hooptys I've owned in the past. Even if one is religious about doing coolant flushes heater cores still corrode and leak, dieletric fittings could prolong its service life but even at a cost of $0.005 per vehicle on the assembly line GM wouldn't do it.

The part is probably no more than $40 but to replace it is a chore, the plenum under the dash by the glove compartment has to be pulled to access it. Basic tools and a metric ton of patience will get it done, I had the one in my '67 F250 done (no a/c) in about an hour.

Good luck.
