Vibrating hood - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

When cruising at highway speeds, the middle of my hood on my '72 vibrates and moves up and down quite a bit. Is this normal? All of the brace pads are intact and in good shape. What else should I check?

i had the same problem with my truck. someone told me to replace the brace pads cause they tend to dry up and shrink over time. put new in and worked like a charm.

The other thing that happens is that people sit on the hoods and
the stiffness is removed. It is then a matter of replacing the hood or bracing it. The best brace idea that I have seen was posted on the board several months back. The board member used a brace off of an old hood, welded it between the front/rear braces and glued a rubber strip between the hood and the brace.
Once painted it almost looks factory.

Take a peice of radiator hose and cut pieces about 3-4 inces long, then cut the hose pieces down the side. remove the old pads and stuff these in there with the opened end towards the hood. This will work pretty good if you use a couple of them...thats if you don't have a show truck....

it worked for me....

I like the radiator hose fix idea, but I'm a cheap-azz...

Probably look better than all the silicone I was planning to pump in there. Probably would have found out that the silicone implants caused problems later and would've had to take them out in a few years, heh.

I stuffed a bunch of chunks of rubber from a conveor belt from the ole pulp mill and it stopped the hood flutter quite a bit, but it is still there at idle, which I think is cool

Mine either. Probably why it made so much noise. I wedged a chunk of wood in there to quiet it down. Exactly where do the pads go?

There should be (6) pads. (2) between the front bracing and hood, (2) between the rear bracing and hood, and (2) long strips between the front to rear bracing. Kits are available.

It is pretty easy to replace or install the pads if the hood is off and laying on its back. Since the pad fits between the sheet metal and bracing, you spread the gap so as to get pad started and then is just a matter of working the pad into place. The pads are made of small cell foam rubber, so compressing and squeezing them in works pretty well. I use 3M trim cement to hold the pads in place.

You can install the pads with the hood on but I think that it is easier with the hood off.

when i first got my truck the previous owner had that problem and he stuffed folded up news papers where the rubber pads used to be
