Carrier Bearing is shot.. replace with 1 piece driveline?????

I have a 72 swb and it has 2 drive lines, i noticed the carrier bearing is shot and has lots of play, does this need to be replaced asap and why are there 2 drive lines vs 1?? Also my truck is on air ride would it be a good idea to just keep 2 for angel purposes?? Thanks

Check out this thread and see if it answers some of your questions. Most, if not all of these pickups came from the factory with swing bearings. Never knew why though.

with air bags I would keep the 2 piece driveshaft.
Take the assembly to a drive line shop and have it done professionally.

I just had my driveshaft redone.. I took it out.. the bearing was like 26 bucks and the 3 ujoints(usa made) installed was 83.oo (I got none greaseable as I've broken the greasable ones)
alittle over a c note if you have them do it all now.. and nows the time to have them all replaced

it is very location specific as far as cost. I'd give my left lugnuts to be able to do it for 100 bucks. It's more like 200 here. 3 new joints, new carrier bearing and spin it and reballance if needed.

Well I only paid like $15-$17 for the standard setup . Heavy duty they are like over $100. Plus I did it myself. Very easy job, I do not see why spend so much money. Even I did it myself and I am dumb.

Re: Carrier Bearing is shot.. replace with 1 piece driveline?????

I kept the two-piece and went to a 3/4 ton driveshaft when I did my SM465 conversion..... my shaft has the larger carrier bearing and the big 1350 u-joints...... except for the rear which has a conversion joint until I buy a 1350 yoke for my 12-bolt.......

before that I was always killing u-joints and carrier bearings with the 383...... I also killed countless 700r4's and one 12-bolt

I have had a few carrier bearings go out on me. If it doesn't knock around now, it will soon. If you can disassemble and reassemble a U-joint replacing the carrier bearing only takes few minutes.
