1956 truck spare tire

where does the spare tire go on a 56 chevy 1/2 ton i dont have the spare tire fender so i know it mounts under the bed ? but i never seen one mounted there would it be same bracket from a 60s trucks ?

Im just going on a whim here, but I believe if you didn't have a spare tire in the fender, then there was no spare?? Although I have not searched very much on this topic, I would think the spare fender mounted tire was the option they provided to those who wanted it...

I could be wrong though because the Cameo trucks had a special mount under the bed, so maybe they also fitted the step-sides with a similar mount??

A steel under bed spare tire hanger real real close to the same as came on a 60-66 was the typical spot for the spare on all 55-59's - the side mount was a popular option in the 50's and provided a unique look and easy accessability to the tire. The 55-59 under bed hanger used a horseshoe shaped bracket on one end that attached to a long bolt that went up through the frame - on 60-66's this horseshoe was omitted and replaced with a simple hole in the end of the tire brace. That is an obvious and noticeable difference to keen experienced eyes or the right show judge - otherwise undetectable by the average Joe ....hope this helps....

yes, the 55-59 had a bracket under the bed, most were discarded because they are such a pain to get at.
you had to jack up the spare just to unbolt the bracket.

if i need a spare tire carrier, i'd look into fitting a tire winch under there, like they have on the new vehicles.
or travel with a tire wench, let her get your spare out...

my 49 spare tire was mounted behind the rearend from the factory, mine was missin so i used a spare tire underbed mount off a 60 model chevy truck an worked perfect

ogre, i was gonna use the winch setup myself but after askin a bunch of people an seein for my self, they brake why to easy an have seen damage on hotrods from this, i would suggest if u went that route by a brand new one,

cool thanks alot for all the replies , i have the brakets from a 69 chevy truck i had i will see if it works and ifts if not i can just drill an extra hole

hey OGRE where did you get your bed wheel tubs ? or did you make those your self ,like the countors like the bed has ?

you see my wheel tubs in that picture?
i cut the bed side with a jigsaw and reused the cut out for the tub.
i cut some 10ga steel 3'' wide for the tub portion and just welded them together.
