doh! look at what I brought home

well I saw this and had to have it. I have no idea why. Wife thinks I am homer simpson, instead of donuts its vehicles. Anyways its rusted out but original, 67 cst with a 327/th400. runs good for the most part. Going to drive it as is but I need some help. I have no real brakes until the pedal is half way pressed and boom, the tires (front I think?)damn near lock up. Its like its getting its pressure all at once. The PO did some major work on the ALL drum brakes, mostly everything has been replaced but there is a huge problem, so... he said that it needed a new proportioning valve....well I didn't think all drums had such a thing, but sure enough they have a distribution block. So I am guessing this is what he is speaking of. He said the master cyl and booster were replaced about a year ago and the drums/ shoes/ hardware are all new. I think there was a new hose or two on the receipts. Theres good resistance on the pedal when you start to push down and the feel of the pedal is good, its just you have no real brakes until about half way down the they will lock up if you dont take your time. Can't drive it that way on the snow and ice so I need some help.

Also, the 327 has a stock 4 barrel manifold with a bad rochester on it, will a spare carter afb bolt on?

and some pics

Is the AFB a spread bore if so then yes. If it has a stock manifold on it then it is probably a spreadbore.

Re: doh! look at what I brought home

AFB's are squarebore carbs. So it would require an adapter to fit the stock spreadbore manifold.

Holley makes a spreadbore 650 with vacuum secondaries that will bolt right in place of the ol' Q-puke.

nice truck Homer!JK I think you made a good find and yes the Carter AFB should fit and def will fit if it has the dual mounting holes on the factory intake you will use the inside holes most [if not all of the 300 hp and up ,I think]had the Carter AFB carb on them OE

67 CST should have bucket seats. Look at the cab behind the seat and see if there is a brace about 12" long in the center along the top.

I got it for 500, because of the brakes, the body has cancer throughout but I like it and I can take the 72 off the road for longer periods of time now.

The po sold the buckets, but I am a bench person anyway, now the wife doesn't even have the tcase shifter in her way!

Did you tell your wife its a CST? A 67 CST! Any man in his right mind would buy a 67 CST for a price like that!!

Sounds like there is something wetting the brake pads, like brake fluid, they will keep sliding with a lot of pressure then lock up quickly.

ok,ok, dont flame me, but what is so nice about a 67 cst?

I know the PO, hes somewhat reputable around these parts as far as knowledge, but like I said, I dont even think drum/drum have prop valves. He was pretty adament about that being the issue. Bunch of receipts came with the truck, wheel cyl, lines, shoes, hardware, drums... I think this was an existing problem with the brakes that the po threw parts at to fix then just got fustrated.
From what I know, and its very little is that if I had a leaky wheel cyl it would be one tire, not the front (or all) engaging roughly at once. and with being drum/drum the brake should adjust themselves.
I haven't had a chance to really look at it yet but it seems that he replaced everything but this distribution block. never in my life have I had one, or heard about one going bad in stock apps.
Its weird, you go to use the brakes, the pedal feels fine, you get to a point (probally half way in travel) and the wheels want to lock up. I mean you feel like youre going to go through the winshield.

Re: doh! look at what I brought home

Vintage is right on the brakes. Fluid on the brake shoes will make the brakes lock up fast. Check the wheel cylinders and make sure they are not leaking. Heck while you got the drums off just replace the wheel cylinders and front brake hoses, they are cheap. Also a leaky rear axle seal will cause the brakes to lock up in the rear.

Re: doh! look at what I brought home

Man what a deal! I would start off by inspecting the brakes at the wheels. Check adjustment and hardware. If all that checks out I would bleed them. It would be a starting point. I have seen alot of drum brakes installed wrong. Good luck

Drum/drum brakes do have prop valves. That may be the problem.

drum/drum trucks do NOT have a proportioning valve, just a distribution block.
Pres the pedal down with your hand. Is the pedal real easy to pres and then you get reisitance 1/2 way down? You should only have free pedal travel the first 1/2 inch or so. I've seen this cause what you describe.

It not a huge deal since they aren't super rare but the CST's essentially just had more "bling" It doens't mean a lot to some people but it does to others for collectability/desirability. They had nicer trim and meant factory bucket seats, also things like special bright radio and instrument knobs, wrinkle finish glovebox door, better insulation, and some other things I can't think of right now. Your truck also has the nicer brightwork on the front end. Typically if a truck was a CST it had other nice options (not because they came with CST but because if a truck had an upgrade like that, it likely wasn't a plain jane otherwise) Your truck having a TH400, 327, Power brakes, swaybar, etc is an example of this.

right on, its funny, up here I look at how nice a truck is by the amount of rust.

The PO said the buckets he pulled out of it were pristine, sold them to a buddy for 750.

I stand corrected. Learned something new today. Thats why I love this site. Longhorn man I just thought the block on the side of my 68 master was the same as the one on my 72. That explains why I have to change it to a prop valve when I do my front disc brake upgrade. Thank you so much for clarifying that.

An AFB will not mount to a spreadbore manifold correctly without an adapter. Dual mounting holes will allow it to physically be a "bolt on" but the butterflies won't be able to open.
